Still working on the wife's computer - no luck with recovery last night - trying other things this morning.

Can't even get it to come up in safe mode - have some more diagnostics running now

Mac, do you have a linux live disk you could pop in there to try to save stuff?
Don't have anything Linux.
About to head out to go computer shopping. Will try to remember and see if they have something.
mac ,you can download pclinuxOS and burn to a disk and boot it live. you can get many distros at distrowatch.com
there are a lot of things on the disk you can use.
Found that out a bit ago - have to do it later.
I'm fairly computer savvy but my expertise is on the mainframe side.
Just got back from getting a new machine for her - I figure even if I manage to get the old one up in running it' won't be long before it gives out again.
Plus she will have her internet and won't be bugging me to fix it so I can take my time on it.
