Other advances foreshadowed in U.S. Patent Office filings suggest a pay-as-you-puff feature where users could buy time credits on the Internet and then sync an e-cigarette via USB to control how much they can smoke, possibly as a way to cut down. Connecting the device to the computer also would allow users to monitor how much they use, perform maintenance and automatically order additional liquid or tobacco.

Who in their right mind would want that? Pay as you puff. That is just stupid. That right there will get you back to paying what you pay for analogs if not more. One of the reasons vaping was so appealing to begin with is how much cheaper it is. Yes it is healthier, but how it effects the wallet also effects the decisions of smokers as well. That is one of the reasons why cigalikes aren't so great. Most are just overpriced pieces of crap. Some like Green Smoke actually make your habit more expensive then smoking analogs. As for regulations, unfortunately when that day comes they will just lump it in and tax the stuff in as tobacco products increasing the cost of juices. Assuming we will even be able to legally buy them. If big tobacco and other companies have their way the only thing we will be able to buy legally are cigalikes. I can just picture the drug dealers out there on the streets trying to peddle e-juice along with their other "merchandise". lol

"But that's the beauty of regulation because over time, regulation closes that gap. ... We will get to a point where new products have to come through us first."

This is a day that I do not want to see

Yep. Nothing bad can come from a bureaucratic agency regulating technology. I am sure the FDA will show no bias toward the BT companies or the competing products from big Pharma. It will be totally fair, I am sure. Trust them, guys, they are from the government.

What this will do is make it so only a few major companies will be able to afford the regulatory overhead that is required to produce new e-cig technology and get it cleared by the FDA.

My main question regarding regulation is, and continues to be, should the FDA be involved with regulating technology approximately equivalent to the technology required of a flashlight? YES, there are very plain flashlights, there very fancy flashlights, and there are very technologically advanced flashlights. But they are all basically comprised of the technology required of a flashlight, nonetheless.
