Hi Sue,

Just as a suggestion for the future, if you ever want to donate a computer... an easy way to clean it up would be to save off anything you want to keep, then create a New User with a Generic Name. Log out of your, and log in to the new one. Then delete any old User Accounts via Control Panel, removing the data in those account, leaving only the new one. And Uninstall the printers, scanners, cameras, etc., and any programs you don't want to give away. Then install CCleaner (it's a free download - if you get the one w/o Tech Support).

It will clean up a lot of the mess that's left behind from uninstalling programs, to make it a little faster, and you can also have it perform a Wipe Free Space that you can set to 1 or 7 sweeps in a pretty good format(the last option on page 1). I think you can set the Level of the Wipe, too. It also has a Registry Cleaner to help with the Clean Up. This will leave the computer usable, but fairly clean. It's great for a Free Program, for your application, and it also can lend other benefits to the present User. This way, you could do it yourself, and not have to worry about what some else saw or left behind.

Disconnect may be able to say if this would get enough of the personal files to be secure enough for you to feel comfortable about giving it away, but it would at least be a very good start.

thanks VG we did do most of that! I was kidding about drilling holes in the hard drive....I was feeling silly when I said that!
Seriously though, this thing was a dinosaur and a mess in more ways than one....the fan noise was so loud, not to mention how big and heavy the clunky thing was....but the charity pickup took it along with the old VCR's and cassette players...I'm sure someone will play with the stuff.

I should be in bed-Babies coming over EARLY tomorrow and i will need my energy to keep up.Need to eat my cereal and put my jammies on!

As long as it's after midnight and before noon it's PJ & Cereal time! I'm still full from dinner though . I think I'll fit my cereal in right before the noon cutoff.

I'd go with 'no' because at the end of the day, nothing in that procedure guarantees that there aren't data and files laying around. Reformatting/reinstalling (without using the 'fast format' option) is good enough for most people, and if you have the recovery cd it isn't a huge chore.

Better is to use something like DBAN though. It can be set to insane paranoia, but the lower levels are fine.. use that to wipe it, then use the recovery cds to reinstall..

Just be very very careful about booting a system with that cd - any disk it can detect will get wiped. So don't leave your backup drive plugged in or anything...
