First off a HUGE thank you to bigblue30 for his thread.

I built this tonight, its not complete but vapes like a freight train! It is based on bigblue30's Evercool using the TI PTR8100W board and is powered by 8 1/3A NiMH cells, 9.6v. Still need to find a cool home to put it in but it has a 3 position switch, middle off, right off and battery voltage display, left on and vaping voltage display when you hit the fire button. When in the off position you can plug in a USB cable and it will work as a passthrough.

First hit off that 1.5ohm DTC at 4.9v and I almost choked to death on the vapor! I am pretty sure that it is the wrong combo though so if anyone can steer me right I would appreciate it, this is my first step beyond an eGo.

Thank you,

Ron -

Thank you for the tips.

I chose the NiMH 4.8v 600mah because I don't want to go through the hassle of matching batteries, balancing and that other stuff...I do enough of that for the LiPo's in my helicopters. Admittedly though I know nothing of LIon batteries or mods. I did decide that one battery at 4.8v does the trick as anything over the 5v mark tastes like cinder lol. I must experiment with resistances, maybe order some 3ohms.

I put it in a fugly Ratshack project box tonight, no pics it is ....-tastic. I have learned so far that I may be using too big of a gauge wire. What do you guys normally use to wire up the essentials? I do love this TI board, ultra fine tuning of the voltage. Is stacking batteries anytime you use 2 or more, or does that term only apply if that are one over the other? I ask because every time I hear of something going haywire, it is from stacking batteries and this is the main reason I am using these NiMH beasts...I'll say it, I'm am scared lol!!! I know if I get into a smaller power plant I can transplant this board into a much nicer home.

Thank you,

Ron -

This is something I would use in one of my helicopters, how well do you think it would power this mod?

Hobby People 7.4V 850mAh 25C Li-Po Battery Pack w/BEC conn

Seems like it would be a pretty safe alternative to using 2 AA style Li-ion cells. I use this charger for everything anyways lol...

Multiplex LN-5014 Multi Charger

Feedback?

Thanks,

Ron -

I use that same battery but 3 cell 11.1 volt in my battery dock for my PT's. Just don't let it discharge to low. On the helicopter it turns off when the battery gets low.

^Nice

Hmm, maybe I'll trade out the voltmeter for the one with low voltage beep lol...In the years I have been flying I have only puffed one pack and it was of questionable origin to begin with! Cool now I don't have to worry so much about what to put my board in, those packs are pretty small. Thanks.

Ron... Please believe me... I don't wanna get into the whole protected unprotected battery thing...BUT BJ43 made a good point that should not be overlooked... The helicopter batteries are unprotected batteries, they rely on the controller in the helicopter to assure safe operation and over discharge protection.
I personally would not ever use an unprotected battery unless I also added a protection circuit.

Looking good, Ron! I've been thinking of some cool things to put a mod in, like I have two small but old CB radios that have buttons all over. Even built in belt clips on the back. I might some day like to learn how to turn them into ecig mods. Every little device I see now I wonder if it would make a cool ecig. Something comfortable to hold and easy to stick in my pocket maybe....

Keep us updated on finding a home for your mod!

Still haven't put this into anything yet lol...been messing around with a single IMR 14500 juicebox I built. I did order some tiny tact switches from MV and a digital pot. I was reading up on Breakthru's site and decided digital will be much less of a mounting hassle for me...I will probably stick this in a double copper tube since I got some IMR 18350's and build a gnarley coil and toss my new Phoenix RA on it...Home Depot here I come!
