My father in law decided to try e-cigarettes because he has a touch of copd. After a couple of months, he couldn't take the side effects any more, he had a very sore throat and ........ every day. He stopped and went back to cigarettes and immediately the symptoms went away.

I've read he could be allergic to PG? or is it PV? and that he could try VG instead, that maybe he needed to drink more water, and the ........ could be caused by overdose of nicotine.

He got a set from the vaporz shop in the area, and had marlboro low. He would like to go back to the ecig as he lungs felt a ton better and he just felt healthier, but I'm not sure how to lead him. I'd love your suggestions. I tried to read as much as I could from searching, but I'm e-cig stupid so I would really appreciate some help on the subject.

Thanks all,
Mary

PG can definitely cause irritation in the throat. Drinking more vater may help, as PG also dehydrates you. If the irritation persists, switching to VG or PG/VG blend will help. Bear in mind that liquids too high in VG will not work in some cartomizers. IIRC ........ could also be a sympton of nicotine withdrawal

Do you know what PV e used before? Was he happy with it (other than the side effects)?

Hi Mary,
All I can do is give you my experience with e-cigs and my case of copd. When I first started e-cigs all I could do is cough my brains out. I started with pre filled cartomizers also. First of all a cartomizer is a heating element surrounded by filler which absorbs the e-liquid , once the cartomizer is spent a majority of people throw them away. Your best bet would be to play around with different types of juice and mix 100% vg gives you alot of vapor but it is not harsh. You need to find out what brand/type of e-cig he has, then you can go to some of the forum suppliers and buy a couple of boxes of empty cartomizers. Then look at some of the vendors and look for e-liquid that you can select both you nicotine level and mix. I know that The Vapor Room offers different flavors and then allows you to choose the mix , also try some different flavors. I spent about a month playing around with e-liquid strength and mix before I settled with what I liked and what level. I am now coming up on my 1 year anniversary smoke free , I don't have to use my inhaler anymore and have gotten much better lung capacity. I know others will jump in with other suggestions and more detailed information. Everyone here is a great resource and has helped me through some tough times when I was going to throw the whole thing in the garbage.

If it were my family member I'd try flavorless 100% PG juice and flavorless 100% VG juice at his desired nic level. The vendor needs to know that there's a medical issue involved and all PG nic base in the PG flavorless and VG nic base in the other is important. You can track his symptoms using one juice at a time. I'd suggest the VG first since we see more PG reactions than VG around here. This is simply a guess from an 8-month vaper that reads a lot. You might take your question to the Ask The Veteran's forum. You'll find genius minds at work there. It may take a day or two to get an answer. They huddle and discuss the question then post an answer for you. Good luck with your Dad. Gosh, I hope it works out and he's vaping healthy soon.

...that is about as sound a line of reasoning and advice you can get...by doing what the boodle has suggested, you work thru the process of elimination as quickly as possible...........

From what was mentioned earlier about nicotine withdrawl, 8mg/ml is very low for a former heavy smoker. I smoked over a pack a day and have to vape 26mg in order to kill my cravings to my satisfaction. So from what i read i would try mixing it up like Boodle said and try upping the nicotine as well.

Do you know the ohms of his Gogo cartomizers? If they are low resistance maybe he should try standard resistance (less heat for less hit) if his throat gets sore.

And that juice - it doesn't even say the PG/VG.

Thick VG does not work well in most cartomizers (hard to fill, moves too slowly through the stuffing to keep the coil area damp,. causing singeing and bitter burnt taste.

Since I am a relative newbie, maybe I can help interpret a little as this all is so confusing for somebody who doesnt do e cigs at all. (And please all revered members above correct me if i misinterpret). I think they are all saying that the causes for his symptoms could be multiple things. In the juice (the cartridge with the Marlboro flavoring) there are several elements that could potentially cause symptoms. It could be the nicotine, it could be the PG (propylene glycol), it could be the VG (vegetable glycerine), it could be the flavoring itself (which would be the Marb tobacco flavor). The mix generally has nicotine, flavoring, and either a PG or VG base -- but it is unknown or unstated what the base of you dad's mix was. Since we dont know what is causing the symptoms, I believe they are suggesting a process of elimination by going to a vendor that sells the cartridges or juice and order one juice that is 100% PG based with say 8 mg of nicotine (like he had before), and then also ordering one juice or cartridge that is 100% VG based with the same 8 mg of nicotine. (both with no flavoring). Then he can try them both out to try to rule out either PG or VG as the culprit for his symptoms.

Irritation usually = Nicotine
PG lets through the most flavor, most nicotine throat hit, most nicotine irritation
VG dulls everything PG lets through, adds thicker looking vapor
Heat enhances the throat hit and possibly the irritation/dryness

A. - He has an ecig with very few options. It is only compatible with its own stuff. Its own stuff has hot LR (low resistance, lower ohms) cartomizers and less hot standard resistance cartomizers. I am recommending the less hot ones since you have almost no choices.

B. - If the juice he has in thin, with no other info my bet is it's 100% PG, possibly relabeled Chinese juice. I found that irritating. When I switched to using juices with 20-30% VG in them, I did not get irritated.

Unlike a suggestion above, if he has COPD and vaping is making him sore, I do not recommend raising the nicotine right now. I recommend first trying smoother juice with a bit of VG in it. Not too much though because VG makes juice thicker and that can cause cartomizers to singe (the liquid doesn't move quickly enough through the stuffing). And I recommend finding out if he is using the LR (low ohms) cartomizers and if so buy the standard resistance ones.

Can anyone suggest some good Marlboro juices with selectable PG/VG?
