This is just odd. I finally have a few mixes down pat. I love my Mothers Milk clone, unicorn milk clone and a custard recipe that rocks, Buuuuuut, after about a 6 week steep, they seem to fade. Not just fade but get big time muted. Is there a flavor preservative I don't know about.

I only started to run into this as I started making 100ML plus batches of a recipe that I know I can hit consistently. In week three to five they are real good, but as they get up to or past 6 weeks, it goes downhill. This is true on especially the custard. I use all CAP and TFA flavors and VG/PG from essentials depot, my nic is from MFS.

Any input would be appreciated.

My custards never last 6 weeks.

LOL, I hear you, neither did mine till I mixed two really large batches of trusted recipes (this Custard and Unicorn Milk). The custard sat longer than usual and I noticed the fade as I went on through the bottle of Custard (I also use V1). Maybe it was just getting muted to ME, could be my first case of flavor blindness since I started DIY, I dunno. As I said this was my first time mixing 100ML plus batches. I got used to changing flavors quickly when I was mixing smaller batches while dialing in recipes.

Chipotle.
If the time the juice is sitting is what is causing the loss of perceived flavoring then to me it's a simple solution, make smaller batches more frequently and don't let the stock age past 6 weeks. No reason to go searching for something you don't really need, especially with how vastly different our individual palate can be in regards to taste.

It is also entirely possible that the "steeping" is causing the flavors to mix and intermingle over time as they oxidize from exposure to air, meaning that it is possible that the flavors are not actually fading, but one flavor is overpowering the others as they break down over time, essentially drowning out all the flavoring you can actually taste. There are a few flavors I have which are fantastic at 5-7% but can really begin to taste like nothing if you go over 10% with them.

Realistically though, unless you lab-analyze the juice the day you mix it and then again after six months of sitting you'll never really know what is causing the flavor profile to change.

Smaller batches would be an obvious cure for the issue, but I find I need to get ahead of myself with my trusted juice mixes. This gives me the time to experiment a bit more without the pressure of needing to mix vapable juice on a first shot every time. I enjoy DIY, but I like to do it on more of my schedule rather that when I have to, if you know what I mean. PS: I mix for two rabid vapers, me and the wife, so it can be a daunting task to keep up sometimes when you mix 30 to 60ML's at a time.

Interested to know about this also having experienced some flavor muting in large batches of Custards in particular. Other flavors don't seem to be affected as much and improve when mellowed out over time.
Sweetness, on the other hand, seems to increase with longer storage. I have stopped using sweetener and replaced it occasionally with brown sugar if needed but max. VG seems pretty much sweet enough on it's own.
I'm not retired so like to make up some quantity to save time with certain adv recipes.
Are you making up high VG % juice?
Can't say that this happens to commercially made liquid so I wonder if there is something they use to preserve or set the flavor!

Maybe the thing to do is to Mix Batches that are no bigger than 3 or 4 Weeks worth?

I mix low percentages. around 5% for the V1 custard.
I agree. Over flavoring can cause problems, might try half the percentage and steep test.
Steeping serves to blend the flavors to together to effect a desired taste for most folks. If steeping does not improve the taste for you ......

Custards usually get better and 6 weeks steeping is not that long for Custard recipes . Many think they are at their best after a 3 month steep .

I know a lot of people claim juice flavor fading but in reality it is their familiarity with it that tends to make them think the flavor has faded .

The cure seems to be switching to a completely different flavor profile for a while. Thats what works for me as well.

Well the solution is obvious, teach the lady to mix!
The old saying 'bout giving fishes and teaching fishing never gets old.

Spoken like a true single guy! lol

I believe it is more vape fatigue than flavor actually muting. I've bought ready mixed custards though that lasted and kept the same flavor or got better for months.

Was married once so well aware the fact that some things never happen.:D
For vape fatigue try some strong menthol or flavourless before gettin rid of your stock and see if it helps.
Always stock up some menthol!

Oh, I never said I was going to ditch the stuff, just that it doesn't taste as good as when it was in its prime!

Thanks all for the help.
