I've been working on a good friend for about three years to help her start vaping, finally it appears to have stuck. :) She has been smoke-free for about a month, doing well. She has one complaint: When she vapes she has drainage out of her left ear. I have no idea of an explanation or if there's an actual correlation. Has anybody encountered this? Thoughts?

I have lifelong middle ear problems of a similar variety. The drainage doesn't have anything to do with vaping per se, but it could be caused by the suction created when she draws from it, like sucking on a milkshake. This leads to a huge pressure change in the mouth and nasal cavity that could lead to pressure changes in the ear. She may have a perforated eardrum (if it's small it won't lead to hearing loss, and it often doesn't hurt at all) and needs to see a doctor as soon as possible.

In my personal experience, I had a perforated eardrum from sleeping with a bad cold (seriously), because I tend to build up fluid in my ear as it is and it didn't take much. My case was much worse and there was significant hearing loss, though it was temporary.

Until she sees a doctor (did I mention that she needs to see a doctor? Because she needs to see a doctor!), is she using an automatic battery? Try switching to a manual so the draw isn't so hard.

I'm not sure this is related but I'll post just in case it helps somehow.

I've had fluid in my ear for four years. No infection just intermittent blockage. I flew cross country in 2010 with a terrible head cold and although I never had an ear problem before I have had problems ever since. I was hoping that quitting smoking would clear this up but five months later with still no relief.

I've been vaping peppermint for a few weeks now. Peppermint is known to clear sinuses and it does make my nose run while vaping. But apparently it's finally also drained my ear. It's been two weeks now and the first time in four years that my left ear doesn't block up and sound hollow when I speak.

Could be that quitting smoking is allowing her sinuses to clear.

That's awesome. So happy you were able to find something that finally worked to get rid of the fluid!!!!
