Hi all,

Just wanted to share my latest creation with you. I used white oak, finished with boiled linseed oil. It contains 2x18350 1200mah batteries. A 3amp horn style switch from Madvapes, and a 5v LDO regulator. I installed a master on/off switch that failed so I will be replacing that soon.

I've also created a 2x14500 5v mod as well. It's taller, thinner, but bascially the same design.

I got drunk at a wedding and told my buddy I could make a wood mod. Well, two months later....here it is. Hope you like it Joe!

It looks quite nice, well done. Linseed oil is a bit passe though. My favorite is Watco Danish Oil.
Unlike plain linseed oils, Watco oil also contains resins which polymerize and dry in the wood and not on it.
What that means it's a penetrating oil and varnish (the resins) mix. It really does a nice job of sealing and hardening the wood.

You should do the inside and all edges also, this will help minimize any humidity effects and differential type swelling which may cause warping.

I believe Fono is a strictly a 100% tung oil man (not Tung Oil Finish) with no top coat.

His well made boxes are certainly quite lovely.

WillyB,

Thanks for the great suggestions. I was really having a hard time deciding what to use. I do plan on making a few more to replace some of my friends plastic battery box mods I made them in the last year or so. I am no woodworker by any stretch of the imagination....but I was just tired of trying to find something that fit the job correctly. Oh, and thanks for the great pics....something to aspire to!

I like it!

What did you use to hollow out the wood? A router or something different?

Exactly, I used a straight edge router bit. Gorilla glue to secure the top and bottom pieces. Simply but effective. If I did it again I would make the grove the full depth and just have the lid be a straight piece with no routing. As it was, I had to offset the button a bit to keep it off the seam between the lid and main body piece.

Turned out quite well, It's got that Pacific Northwest flair :) You can tell peeps its organic. I for one, want to see pics of the other one too!

You know us in the Northwest....we love us some organic stuff! I'll be finishing up the other one in the next few days. Hopefully before I have to mail out this one to my buddy so that I can take a few comparison pics.

What I really love about your box is that is is all one type of wood. Don't get me wrong, the others that are inlaid with multi colored woods are nice, but I like simplicity. A box like yours would also look awesome in red oak or cedar. Or, for the interesting patterns, a bird's eye maple, or some type of burled wood. This is something I've always wanted to play around with, but I don't have any wood working tools. I'm glad that there are several people out there that are making use of such a beautiful material to make box mods with. WOW! Hats off to you! :w00t:
