Note: I am an independent reviewer, with no connection at all to this or any other purveyor of vaping equipment or juice.
I received my order of My Hero tobacco -- Original from MyVapeJuice.com on Wednesday, January 30. I have waited until today to review it so that it could steep.
Packaging
MyVapeJuice.com mails its packages of juice in boxes with genuine popcorn -- actual popped popcorn kernels. This is a shrewd packaging strategy. It is both fun and useful, since it has the potential to absorb any liquid that may leak during the shipping process. The package contains a note saying not to eat the popcorn. Nevertheless, the popcorn was as tasty as one could expect from popcorn that is several days old. (It was air popped -- not microwave -- yellow popcorn without salt, butter, or flavoring.)
The juice comes in translucent plastic bottles that have slightly tapered, squared edges at the top. Likely made of low-density polyethylene. They are easy to work with. The caps are white plastic with a folding spout. The folding spout is especially useful for continuously pouring the juice, for example into a tank, clearomizer, or large cartomizer.
The labels are white with black ink, custom printed for each bottle so that they contain all of the specific details of the product (PG/VG ratio, nicotine content, and bottling date).
The overall impression is one of simplicity and practicality, in keeping with the devil-may-care spirit of the slogan of MyVapeJuice.com: "Live Laugh Love and Vape."
General information
I ordered the 30ml bottle (1 fl. oz.) of My Hero Original with 18mg of nicotine per ml., with all other specifications according to MyVapeJuice.com's "proprietary blend"; this juice is based on a 70/30 PG/VG base with no additional flavorings, menthol, or sweetener.
MyVapeJuice.com offers a wide variety of choices when purchasing its juice. In addition to offering a choice of nicotine levels (0, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36), MyVapeJuice.com allows consumers to choose the blend of their base liquid, from 0/100 to 100/0 PG/VG (though it notes that the 0/100 PG/VG blend may contain traces of PG). MyVapeJuice.com also allows consumers to add extra shots of flavor, menthol, and sweetener. This broad range of choices creates a potential for many different variations of this one juice by virtue by combining these options. As stated above, I ordered the "proprietary blend" that consists of a 70/30 base with no additional flavorings, menthol, or sweetener.
The juice retails for $13.99, and I was able to get 15% off ($11.89) using a coupon from the http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/pay-forward-pif/85781-deals-steals.html thread hear on ECF. This is a very competitively priced juice at the pre-coupon price and a bargain based on the discounted price. I ordered it Saturday, January 26th, it was bottled (according to the label) on Monday January 28th, and I received it Wednesday, January 30th.
This is a naturally extracted tobacco (NET) flavor. MyVapeJuice.com offers a brief description of the composition of this flavor on their website: "Blended from our proprietary broad leaf tobacco extract created from locally grown organic tobacco, Our 'My Hero' Tobacco -- Original is a smooth, light, and clean vape that bestows a true tobacco flavor. Its [sic.] a good one!"
Luceblueboy's review of this liquid from December 2013 (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...ews/361027-my-vape-juice-my-hero-tobacco.html) indicates that it is Connecticut broadleaf tobacco. And Leaf Only, an American whole leaf tobacco distributor, describes Connecticut broadleaf as "smooth, bold, light, and clean… strong but not overwhelming."
Connecticut broadleaf is grown in the Connecticut valley, which runs from north-central Connecticut through central Massachusetts, and the majority of Connecticut broadleaf is actually grown in Massachusetts. It is most frequently used as a wrapper leaf for dark-colored (maduro-type) cigars, primarily machine-made, mass-produced cigars. Recently, several major premium, hand-rolled cigars have begun sporting Connecticut broadleaf wrappers, including lines from Macanudo and Arturo Fuentes. It is occasionally used as filler in cigars and blended with other tobaccos in cigarettes.
Tasting parameters
I tested using a Joyetech eVic equipped with a Smok 1.5ohm XL dual coil cartomizer that holds 5ml of juice. I used the variable voltage (VV) settings on the eVic during this evaluation to adjust power.
The juice has been steeped for 43 days, calculated from the bottling date listed on the label (Monday, January 28).
Overall impressions
In the bottle, My Hero Original has a dry, earthy smell with a strong amount of smokiness. The juice itself is dark brown and nearly opaque, which is likely due to the fact that Connecticut broadleaf tobacco darkens easily.
I vaped it at a variety of voltages. No matter what the voltage, it had a mild throat hit, a mild lung hit, and a mild nose hit when exhaled directly through the nostrils.
This put out a good deal of vapor at every wattage, and the vapor does not have a strong smell.
Evaluation of flavor at specific power settings
6 watts (3 volts): My Hero Original presents itself with bright earthy tones that play counterpoint to its bold tobacco: crisp, deep toast and charcoal smoke with very subtle cashews wrapped around a commanding and grizzly dark tobacco flavor that pervades throughout. This is closely followed by the addition of a trace of espresso bean that quickly fades, leaving the original tobacco flavor with its complementing trio of toast, charcoal smoke, and cashew. The finish is very clean, leaving no aftertaste and creating an impression of lightness in spite of the strength of its tobacco flavor. Very straightforward, crisp, and well balanced. The mouth feel is earthy and nicely matched to the flavors.
6.4 watts (3.1 volts): This change in power introduces very little change in flavor or texture.
6.8 watts (3.2 volts): 6.8 watts introduces a brief, slight hit of sweetness in the initial impact, and it intensifies the tobacco flavor throughout. The trace of espresso bean is transformed into a longer lasting hint of ash. Even so, it is still close enough to the 6 watt power level that I'm not sure I could tell the difference blind.
7.7 watts (3.4 volts): At this power level, the taste finally makes a noticeable change. The initial impact still has a hint of sweetness, and the charcoal smoke is still present. The cashew disappears, and is replaced by a slight papery flavor that presents the first hint of detectable woodiness. The grizzly but distinct dark tobacco flavor remains constant, preserving the balance.
8.6 watts (3.6 volts): At this power level, other flavors recede and the tobacco makes an emphatic stand alongside a hint of ash. The finish becomes ashy, and the mouth feel takes on a touch of gravel.
9.1 watts (3.7 volts): This change in power introduces very little change in flavor or texture.
Conclusion
This is a robust and durable, straightforward tobacco flavor, with a surprisingly clean finish that gives it real staying power. At lower power levels the dark tobacco flavor is counterbalanced by brighter earthy notes, while higher power levels bring out its wonderfully coarse and dark tobacco feel.
Vapers who are looking to sink their teeth into direct, unguarded tobacco flavor will find this immensely satisfying, and it's a good candidate for an all-day vape.
Parting note
Given the darkness of this juice, I'd expected it to be hard on my equipment. Like Luceblueboy, I haven't noticed any noticeable degradation in equipment performance after a full day of vaping this liquid nonstop.
Score: 10/10
