Hi,

I've had an interest in vaping for about a year or so; it's a popular activity at my community college between classes. I am not currently a smoker and have no desire to use nicotine. I plan to mix my own juice. I have a few questions (well, for now anyway):

1. I've heard people say you can just vape pure VG. Is this true? I see some tutorials mixing it with distilled water in an 80/20% ratio as well. Which of these is the better method? I'd rather avoid PG since I hear its harsher, although many flavorings are PG based it seems.

2. I want to blow really big clouds. I hear the best way to do this is by using <1ohm coil. While the more technical parts of vaping are intriguing to me and I feel mostly comfortable with what I've learned so far (one must take care to not overstress the battery, etc), I was wondering if this would be too much. If I'm in it for the vapor itself, what is a good option for a device that gives lots of vapor but isn't too difficult for a beginner? I feel pretty confident about the whole thing but am always open to others' advice.

There's a vape shop downtown I plan to visit at some point but its hard for me to get to, I figured I'd ask around online.

Thanks for reading this, and thanks in advance for your help. I feel a bit rude just asking questions right off the bat, hopefully you're not offended.

So just starting out, you probably would want to go with a regulated box mod with a cloud chucking tank. There are tons of different mods and tanks for this. This forum has the best reviews on most equipment. As for non regulated (MECHANICAL) mods, please do a lot of research beforehand. These are the mods that can be dangerous if you set it up wrong. Dont get me wrong, I use mech mods pretty often, and it's a great hobby. There are great articles in here that can help you either way. Between YouTube and the forum clouds you will chuck!

Why put something in your lungs if you don't have to? You think the "cool club" out weighs the "healthy club"? You are being silly in your thinking. CHEERS!
With all due respect, I could ask you the same question. I understand there are health risks, there are health risks in breathing in the air in my city and the caffeine in the coffee I drink. Your concern is valid, but I came to discuss and get answers to my questions.

I'll look into the regulated mod and tank you suggested. I was thinking of going with an "RTA" since it would let me make the coils myself, which intrigues me. I'm unsure if that's what you meant or not. Thanks for the info!

I'll say right off the bat, that I would never suggest someone who doesn't smoke to start vaping-healthier doesn't mean healthy. However, if you're intent on vaping, you need some good info.

If you're looking for clouds, you'll want a "sub-ohm" tank (a tank with an atomizer that has a coil resistance below 1.0 ohm). My favorite is the Smok TFV8 Cloud Beast. The great thing about this tank, since you mentioned wanting to build your own coils, is that it comes with both pre-made coils and an RTA deck. Next you'll need a mod that can handle it. Any regulated mod that is at least 200 watts, and if you're planning on using titanium or nickel for your coil wire, temperature control, will work, although you'll want to watch reviews on YouTube and get good info here to know which one will suit you. I would say go with the Smok Alien 220w TC, it's my personal favorite. And always, always, keep safety in mind, especially when you buy batteries.

Thanks for the answer, I'll definitely check out the tank and mod you mentioned! I had a family member who bought a Note 7 just before the battery scare, so I plan to be very cautious in my dealings with batteries indeed.

If you are certain this is something you want to do and you want to build for cloud chucking my suggestion would be to look into the RDTA box by Ijoy it has a built in RDTA tank is a temperature control 200w regulated box that also has premade coil as well as rebuildable deck options I have used this device and for an entry level device that is all in one package it would be a good start it takes a lot of the guess work out of it. You will want to purchase some quality batteries and charger I suggest Samsung 25r cells and a nite core digi-4 charger as it isn't safe to charge cells in the devices. You will want to download an ohms law calculator onto your smartphone or tablet and learn about ohms law to get the best performance out of your builds because regardless of regulated or mechanical devices ohms law still applies. As far as juices are concerned there are companies that make VG based flavorings I don't recommend vaping strait flavorless VG as it really doesn't taste that great.

Thanks for your reply. Lots of good mod suggestions already, I like it. I already have an external charger for 18650 cells so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll look into VG flavors as well. Regardless of taste, can vaping straight VG be done or does it need to be mixed with water?

You can vape strait VG but it will not work in a tank system as it is to thick and won't wick properly.

I've heard RTAs are superior to RDAs since as I understand it RDAs require refilling quite often compared to RTAs (I could be wrong of course, all this is new to me).
For cloud chasing RDAs are far superior. Yes you have to drip on them but everything is give and take. If you're going to use 100% vg, which will give the biggest clouds, you'll need a dripper. At cloud contests that's what they use is pure vg.

RTA systems are coil decks inside of a chamber within a tank, so while it doesn't require constant dripping, a thick straight VG juice won't wick fast enough you would end up with dry hits. I own many RTA and 30 pg / 70 VG works best in systems like that so you would have to thin the juice to a ratio of that sort for them to work properly where as with an RDA which are generally better for cloud chasing could be used with none thinned VG as you paint the coils manually instead of being fed by a tank.

Ok. If I did get an RTA (I'm leaning more towards an RDA now after your and Don's comments) could I dilute the VG with water instead of pg? I've seen some others doing this but I'm unsure of the results and if its recommended.
