Nano coil questions

I'm looking for comparisons and opinions on wicking 1mm dual nano coils. I can get the cotton wick through the coil, but is it any better than just using a cotton cloud? Anybody try both methods? I tend to either get a slightly dry hit or a little juice in my mouth at times and can't find a happy medium. Thx!

Cotton clouds are nice, Perrty to look at too. I've tried the cotton through and the cloud on my microcoils. I can't really see or feel a difference, Tried both of em at once and that was kinda cool.

Yeah that's what I've tried too. I wick the cotton through the coil (currently 15 wraps at .6 ohms), and have tried very little cotton, or a lot basically covering the whole deck. I've also tried to only cover the center portion between the 3 posts, so when I drip I'm covered and don't need all the extra cotton around the outer deck. Wicking a 1mm nano coil can be tough, especially trying not to choke the coil. Maybe that's the cause??????

Well you don't want the inside of the coil to choke, You don't want too little cotton either. Post a picture of your current setup right now?
I'd have to see what your workin with to really know whats going on.

Here's my current setup, has wick through the nano coil and under and around. Patriot, 15 wrap 0.6 dual 1mm nanos. 28 gauge Kanthal.

Looks like it might be a tad too much cotton through the coils - that's a long throw with 15 wraps. You might be better off building 2 ten-wraps of either twisted or larger gauge. Just thinking out loud.

Yeah, Try doing the 10 wraps as said by Laz and only using a cotton cloud. Might work out pretty good.

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the cotton cloud only for awhile and see how it goes............thanks. Much easier to wick too.

Agreed - the problem with 'nano-coils' and cotton is that cotton expands so much (which is otherwise a good thing), and less and almost always more. That said, threading cotton through 'nano-coils' is difficult to gauge - so you might be better off with a "cotton cloud".

And from the photo it does look like the threaded cotton in the coils has swollen, and is a bit much. Also, as Lazarou pointed out, personally, I wouldn't thread through with that many wraps - the 'contact-coil' action tends to create a lot of concentrated heat, which might be causing that long stretch of cotton to get too warm and not wick efficiently.

Thanks for all the help guys. It's a b*tch trying to wick a 1mm nano coil, and I think I was twisting it too much in an attempt to get it through that it was choking the coil. Cotton cloud seems to work great.

You could also try wrapping the cotton around the coils, as in a nano-dragon coil. I know some like it and some don't, but I believe the wicking system was designed to avoid choking a through-wick while maximizing the outer surface area of the coil. Rip Tripper has a vid on it, as I'm sure do others.

I always thread my nanos, 5/64" between 8 - 14 wraps depending on my builds. I've tried using just a cotton cloud and I don't really get as good of hits. Just my opinion. My trick is to use loose pulled cotton and twist only the very tips, then cut the very tippy-tip off with scissors making for a nice needle-like threading appendage.

That being said, I don't get as good of hits if I don't also use some sort of cotton cloud. The past month or two I've been doing a "P" style wick. Not sure if that's a thing. Just what I do and yea - it looks like a P. Threaded through, wrapped around the outer post, and goes back in so one of the tips (the one wrapped around the post) is touching the back side of the coil. The opposite end I will usually tuck at least part of underneath the coil.

Less wicking then your typical cotton cloud, but I feel its as efficient as I will ever get it. At least with cotton anyway. Just make sure your airflow isn't blocked between the posts (like where the screws connect with the actual post). Sometimes it needs a bit of a tuck down. Sometimes not.

Well, after much trial and error I've come to the conclusion that what works for me is that you have to have cotton wicked through the coil, no matter how small. It allows the juice to be pulled up to the coil in the most efficient and consistent manner. I tried a dragon coil, cloud, many other techniques, and all gave dry hits before the juice ran out. I also am using VERY little cotton and only placing it in the center "square" inside of the where the outer legs of both coils are. May not work for everyone, but works for me!
