Okay... this has been really tough. There are about a half dozen lists that all have a few albums that I couldn't live without... and a few that I could. So I had to make the decision based on real life desert island circumstances. I would need a variation to suit all the moods I could be in. I could not live without the White Album (Beatles), Dark Side (Floyd), Electric Ladyland (Jimi),-for my perfect masterpieces of Rock, Kind of Blue (Miles) for my Jazz, Lifetime (Tony Williams) -for my fusion/John McLaughlin fix, Sex Machine (James Brown) for my Funk, (Black Sabbath) 1st- for my heavy stuff, I would also need (Hank) for my country, (5 Blind Boys of Mississippi) for my gospel, and something by (Ludwig Van) for my classical. I also would really have to figure out what I would do if I didn't have something by Django, and Billie Holiday- Probably Robert Johnson for acoustic Blues... (although Muddy's Electric Mud would be crucial too)- I would need a copy of Jesus Christ Superstar- definitely. And probably Pet Sounds... Hot Rats I would need as well, and certainly the Madcap Laughs by Syd Barrett. Ziggy Stardust, and the Elvis Sun Sessions. Probably Live Evil from Miles too, and a few other Beatles records. Bessie Smith I would miss terribly. Then of course there are a bunch of more recent records that are just fantastic.... So you see I understand how tough it is to make this list. The question is how would I chose one of yours.... I have narrowed it down to 2. I will pick one soon, and explain how it was decided....

Oh, I love these.... Prepare to explore the outer limits of music snobbery.

#9 Hot Rats by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - dum dada da da da DA da, dum diddly da dada da da DA.

In the true spirit of 'musical snobbery', I feel the need to correct your saying that "Hot Rats" was done by FZ and the Mothers... when it was actually his 1st SOLO recording!!

Okay... If I had to pick someones list for my desert island. I would take ctor (who's list I had to go through individually). I know that may seem like a strange pick, since his list was missing some of my top albums... But if I was on an island, I would need variety... or I would go crazy. I probably would go crazy anyway (already halfway there)- but variety would be crucial. And his list covered Jazz, blues, country, reggae, funk and classical, and rock. I would need a little bit of each. I want to thank you all again for your involvement... and I hope to see you all again for our next contest, that will be announced soon. Thanks Vapers!!!!

and CONGRATULATIONS CTOR!!!

Second. Lumpy gravy was the first. And, to be fair, members of the mothers (both original and reformed) played on the album...mostly it was absent minded typing though. ;)

Congrats Ctor! This was a great thread and a great idea for a contest :D

Edit: autocorrect buggered up

vaping since: a while

Wow, I feel honored. There were some great lists and great albums mentioned, so I didn't think I had much of a chance. My tastes are pretty eclectic, and I could easlily do a top 10 desert island disks from each genre. And as an aside, I'm a big vinyl collector and have alot of the albums everyone mentioned on original vinyl if they were available. That's what a 3000+ LP collection gets you :).

Thanks for a great contest, and a great surprise! I had a blast, and a really tough time picking just 10 albums :)

Ok... I forgot about Lumpy Gravy... probably because I always considered it part of the whole other project he did, and the fact that he didn't actually play any instruments on it...

I have to thank everyone once again. This was very tough... there were a few lists that really were fantastic, and I literally spent a few hours on Saturday going through this thread (I went through EVERY PAGE at least twice). I almost didn't pick ctor, because he did not have one concise list... and that made it more difficult (since I had to search the thread for his last 3 picks.) There were some lists that seemed like more obvious picks... I LOVE some of the albums picked by the Doctor (especially his nod to Gong for #1), analogbgone, venusjade, dmina, snakeskinta2, pita1028 and others... and I assure you I did not take this decision lightly!! My kids and their mom were impatiently waiting for me, since I try to dedicate my weekends to them... but I had to make a decision. I know some of you may not be happy with my pick, (that happens with every contest unfortunately)- but I tried to pick as honestly as I could.... and my decision was based on the list I thought I could survive on best... and as I previously stated, it was the variety that ultimately won out. Being a musician, and a record collector... I can spend a few hours describing my thought process, and how I came to this decision... but I hope everyone will just believe that I did not make it without a lot of thought, and contemplation. And I hope everyone believes that I tried to consider every list as fairly as I could based on my personal taste. Thank you all again, and I hope to see you all again on CONTEST #5!

I do want to add one little bit, that I have tried to do with a few of my other contests... and that is to have YOU GUYS pick a runner up for a small 2nd place prize (maybe a bottle of juice, and a carto or something). If it gets too complicated, I will pick the runner up myself... but, if by the end of the day, there is one person that gets the most votes from my runner up list (the Doctor, analogbgone, venusjade, dmina, snakeskinta2, pita1028) I will be happy to send out a little runner up prize. You guys each get 1 vote, and you can not vote for yourself. Hopefully it will be simple, and by the end of the day I can see that one person that has received the most votes... Good luck, and Thanks again!!
