In my quest for rhubarb and tamarind flavorings, I came across Natures Flavors and sent them an e-mail regarding which concentrate/flavoring was best suited for vaping. Here's the exchange:

Hi. I'm looking to order rhubarb and tamarindo flavorings from your company to use in e-liquid. Which of your flavors/concentrates would be best for this purpose? Are the flavors listed as intended for coffee and tea diacetyl free? Are the concentrates diacetyl free?

Thank you,
kwill

Thanks for the email....Unfortunately, we do not support the use of e-cigarettes as our flavors are intended to be mixed with beverages and foods. We do have all our flavors and concentrates diacetyl free.

Hope you have a great day!

Really? This is copied and pasted from your website:

Rhubarb Flavoring System for Coffee & Tea is a unique recipe specially tailored to penetrate coffee beans, tea leaves, and any other dried herbs. Due to its unprecedented design this all natural Rhubarb Flavoring System is perfect to add as a flavoring to e-liquids, and e-juice!Rhubarb Coffee and Tea Flavoring System (Kosher, Vegan, Gluten Free)

So which concentrates are diacetyl free? I only found the rhubarb and tamarind flavor in diacetyl free.

I never did receive a response to my second e-mail. Anyone know if the coffee and tea lines are diacetyl free?

I don't think it actually states that. I believe he was stating that each flavor has at least one version that is diacetyl free. If you search their site for tamarindo and/or rhubarb, you'll see over a dozen options for flavorings/ concentrates. One is advertised as diacetyl free, but the others are not. Does this mean the others contain diacetyl? I don't know. That's what I was trying to find out.

Nature's Flavors has a special section for Diacetyl free flavorings.

Organic Flavor for Coffee Without Diacetyl | Flavors Without Diacetyl | Flavors

But, keep in mind it takes approximately 2 months (or more) to get your "Diacetyl free" order (unless things have changed recently). My order took almost 3 months to arrive. It may be due to having a "rush" on these items at the time of my order (hopefully, they've caught up ... and now keep enough of the ingredients in stock).

Seems to me it depends on the NF person what kind of reply you get. Overall I've seen more posts describing replies like you got, but I've also read of more vaping-positive replies.

I don't really fault any flavor manufacturer for distancing themselves from e-cig use. They can't guarantee their products are safe for inhalation without undertaking expensive lab testing. Diacetyl removal is a direct nod to vaping, because that molecule is just fine to eat/drink. They didn't have to provide flavors without it, and I appreciate manufacturers who have done that.

I imagine they want to avoid potential liability issues that could lead to lawsuits. Who would or could fund comprehensive, long-term tests of each flavoring molecule to determine whether they're safe for vaping? That's the big question.

I realize this isn't exactly what you meant, but it's a start. Electronic cigarette liquids analysis-evaluating potentially harmful ingredients | Indiegogo
Since e-liquid makers a) aren't allowed to donate liquids and b) probably won't reveal recipes and manufacturers of flavorings in any case, the study will benefit users of ready-made e-liquids more than DIYers, but....it's a start.

Kwill, have you tried Decadent Vapors Rhubarb concentrate?

I have not. I've been looking for a US vendor so I could avoid the excessive shipping charges. I actually ordered tamarind from Fairies Finest in mid December, but they have not shipped it and will not respond to my emails or telephone calls.
