No independent research has been done, Aspire has a lovely lab results test on their site, proving it is safe, but it is a bit.... vague in parts.
Not saying it is or isnt safe, but IMO just like with all other wick materials, as long as you keep it wet with juice and dont cause it to burn you should be just as fine as with any other wick material.

And let us be honest with each other... really NONE of the materials we use for wicking is 100% safe, if treated improperly. Fibers, fumes or chemical by-product is possible with ALL of the wick materials used by the vaping community... if we treat our wicks improperly.
