So I've been using my k100 mechanical mod I purchased from fasttech with my chimbus running dual micro coils at .6 ohms. It has two 1.5mm air holes on each side (4 total). I have been using it with a sony 30a battery and its been working flawlessly the past few weeks. Well all of a sudden last night, I was changing out the cotton and cleaning the coils, then when I did a dry fire, my mod got REALLY hot after the first press of the button, which it never does. The only thing that ever gets pretty hot after heavy use is the the atty, and all of a sudden it didn't work anymore. I immediately took the battery out, and it was super hot so I set it aside and put a fresh sony 30a battery in. Soon as I fired it, boom, same thing happened. The switch was burning hot, as well as both batteries and the whole mod itself. Both batteries are now blown for good, with scorch marks on the bottom where the negative contact from the switch touched it. I have no idea how or why this randomly happened, or what caused it. Did it somehow short out, or is the switch bad? Please help!!!! Thanks in advance

Well I put the atty onto my other mech, and everything seems to work just fine. So I'm assuming is has to be the mod that is causing the issue. I have def taken the batteries out of the housing, as they are dead and useless now :/

Oh and I forgot to mention, I was reading the reviews about the k100 and someone said they sanded down the contacts which were chrome plated and now they are brass. I did the same to mine a few days ago, but might have sanded the firing switch contact point too much. Also, I cleaned everything thoroughly, including all the contact points, popped in an AW IMR 18650 battery in it, tried firing it up and it got hot again, not as bad but after taking the battery out immediately, I saw that the red label melted towards the bottom of the battery. I tested the battery, and it still works just fine. So I def think it's an issue with the mod. I'm not touching this mod until I get some more advice on what to do. Thank you all for your help so far! It is much appreciated.

From what you've said, it seems the issue is with the k100. Something is defective and causing a short. I have no idea what it could be. Maybe an insulator for the connector? Fire switch? Who knows?

Regardless, don't ever use this mod again until it can be repaired. It's not worth risking your face or home.

Hi SpEeDy314 and welcome to ECF. You've got a hard short happening in either the K100 or the Chimbus.

I just opened my K100 and had a look at it. I doubt it could be the switch at the bottom, but it could be the 510 connector. There is a center pin, a plastic sleeve insulator I think outside that and the main housing outside that. It could be shorting if the insulator is damaged, or if there is metal between the center pin and the outer housing. If this is the case, you will see continuity (or very low resistance) between the center pin and the housing when you meter it. If it is insulated as it should be, there will be no continuity (or extremely high resistance) when you check it.

Pretty much the same situation exists in the Chimbus. There is a center post that needs to be insulated from the body of the Chimbus. So, check the resistance between the center pin at the bottom of the Chimbus and the body with no coils in it. If there is continuity that's the issue.

Glad your safe! Don't use either the mod or the RDA until you figure out for sure what's happening. Let us know what you find out :thumb:

ETA: I just saw your post saying you tried the Chimbus on another mod and it worked. Cool, but that was taking a risk of the same thing happening with the other mod and the battery you had in it. Guess that does narrow it down to the K100 though.
