My dad is a heavy smoker. 4-5 packs of Marlboro reds a day. I've have unsuccessfully switched him to vaping. He has tried. He is a direct to lung smoker. He has tried 9mg of nicotine but still choked him up too bad.

What is an extremely basic foolproof ecig that I could buy him? He has no desire to blow huge clouds or anything. And how low should he go on nicotine? I'm assuming maybe three or so might work. Also, what coils would you recommend whatever ecig you suggested. Thanks.

Hi. I was also a heavy smoker and getting sicker with COPD.

What worked for me was to use a basic 20 or 30 watt mod, and inexpensive tanks like the eleaf GS air tanks. Those, and the 1.2 refill coils are available on evape.us

Many people suggest the Aspire Nautilus tank with cotton coils. Most retailers carry the Nautilus.

So, I never expected this would help for me, but it did! And I am doing well. Sometimes I do have a tobacco cigarette but it's once in a blue moon.

But your father needs to make the commitment to quitting smoking. The fact that I can get good vapor and taste inhaling very shallowly, makes all the success for me. Good luck to you and your father!

Oh!!! I forgot - your father would need 18 or 24 mg nicotine juice. That's what I use too.

He has tried a couple. He had a Kanger Emow or whatever it's called. He has also tried my istick 20w mini but it had 24 mg nicotine.

Yes he coughs bad when he tries them. He takes short hits that I would seem are less than three seconds.
I coughed bad too at first. Cigarettes have chemicals to numb the throat. Vaping doesn't have that, so it feels raw for awhile.

Puff2K is right. It took me a while, in fact, it was an internet search on harsh vapor (which I attributed my issue to) that brought me to this group a couple of years back.

As to an outfit, I'd suggest the simplest, easiest unit you can find. Let's get him off cigs, then we can hand him a basket ;)

I'd give something like that iCare a shot.
I think there's just a different "lung feel" that often prompts a smoker to cough a bit when they first inhale vapor - but then your lungs get accustomed to it. Those things should be able to adjust to a draw he likes, and have a nic kick that may be effective.

If he sticks it out past the cough, then he can figure out if there's a different kind of setup he'd prefer long term.

In other words - the "pods" are probably today's starter vape (compared to stick batteries or egos people started with a couple years ago)...

I would say at least 24 or 30. I smoked 2.5 packs abd started with 18.

If he us sub ohming 12 or 18 may work.

Another thing not Brought up is the VG PG ratio. It may be the PG. Try a 60-70% VG.

Train. This wont work for Clint's father.

The Icare is a MTL device. Clint said his father was a direct to lung vaper.

Doesn't sound like he's a vaper at all (yet)
It sounds like the OPs personal preference influencing what he's buying for dear old Dad.
Ever tried to lung hit a Marlboro ?
For someone just making the switch , an MTL setup will feel more like smoking .
A couple of folks have already suggested the Nautilus , it's a good MTL tank. Pair it with any battery that has enough horsepower to drive it, but KISS .
As far as nic level , if he's THAT heavy a smoker , it will probably take 24mg (maybe even 36) to keep the cravings away .

I'm an older man who had smoked a pipe and needed to quit because of coughing especially in the morning. I bought the Kanger top tank mini and some smooth tobacco liquid. I didn't get much tobacco flavor but was easily able to vape rather than use the pipe since it did provide the nicotine. I wanted the ability to adjust things as I liked.
Since that time I purchased the Eleaf Pico that seems easier to use and the coils have better flavor also it costs quite a bit less. I started out using 18 mg nicotine and have gone down to 9 mg. The flavor of the liquid seems to be a big factor, many people I know can't find a flavor they enjoy, I'm using the RY4 myself.

The act of vaping is different than taking a cigarette puff. It takes getting used to. A "softer" draw on a mod would help cross that bridge and get used to the inhaling of a vape. If you consider a "softer" draw not as good as a regular, deeeeep sucking vape, then just take more draws. He will cross the bridge in a day or two.

A sub-ohm vape is not what he probably wants, not at first anyway. I smooth, cool easy draw of about 5-6 seconds will slowly fill his lungs. A Nautilus or GS Air will be fine. Review them on YouTube (your Dad) a few times. He will get comfortable faster.

As to nic milligrams; I started at 24mg. I just went by physical urge. I found that I took about 3-4 draws every 45 minutes or so. Tell him to follow his urge. If the nic is to strong, he won't have the urge. But, a step stronger gave me confidence that I could get my nic need. If he uses 12mg and feels the urge to vape constantly (physically), then a step up to 18mg. Get a small bottle at each level and let him try each for a day. For me, I help take care of the toppers for awhile, or I do it with them.

For flavoring, his taste buds are probably burnt from smoking. They need time to heal. His sense of smell will come back pretty quickly, but taste takes longer. For me, it was a couple or six months. With that in mind, a blunt flavor like a mint might work. He just has to understand that flavor isn't going to show up in the near term.

Go by urges, get confidence and learn. He will make his own better decisions in three months.

Good luck. I hope success.

Whatever works flavoring-wise. I did notice that mine a lot better, though. Anyway, as to harshness, what is the PG level? PG, in comparison to VG, is harsher. But, PG carries the flavor better. Online you can get a lot of choices for the PG/VG mixture. Just a thought.

At this point, there is a lot to be tried to find the best according to each person's comfort.

May I ask, what mod/pen did you give to him to try?
By "choked him up too bad" do you mean he coughed?
Marlboro Reds are far from smooth or weak; I think perhaps his set up was wrong (for him) in some way. If we figure out why, we should be able to find a good path forward.
I think the choking thing is common for everyone who tries vaping. The vapor production of vaping is so much higher than cigarettes everyone I know who tried vaping, even when they were smokers or even heavy smokers, always cough at first until they get used to it.

I know Lung hitting a Marlboro doesnt make any sense so I have to trust Clint knows what he is talking about.
