negative spring getting all hot and glowy

Heya folks,
I'm working on a simple battery box mod (not my first) and everything seemed to be going well. I tested it with a battery and no atomizer. Power on... smoke?? The negative spring was glowing red hot like an atomizer coil.
It's just a simple AA box with a switch going to a 510 connector, 14500 battery.
Does any one know if I broke science or what's going on?

You broke a science. Check for a dead short at the 510 connector: Excess solder creating a short, melted 510 insulator, touching wires - stuff like that. I'm betting it's there.

Hmm... I just redid everything (using a different 510 connector) and the spring is still getting hot. The battery stays cool, and the power seems to be flowing just fine through my wires... it's just all going to the wrong coil.
