Hello all. Just got married, so my days of smoking the real deal are coming to an end. I tried gum, patch, etc. earlier, but they were horrid. Tried a disposable ecig and thought it was a big improvement on other methods, so I think i will invest. Problem is, where the heck do I begin? I am pretty lost on a lot of terms and stuff as well...cartomizer? atomizer? some seem to need refills with liquid, some do not.

anyways, I basically just want something that is going to be as close to my beloved real cigs as possible. I don't want any crazy flavors or anything, just tobacco. I am a smoker of American Spirit mediums, 8-10 per day. been smoking about 10 years. Any help and/or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to ECF NewJ. Seeing as I'm a new guy as well, I'll hold off on giving any suggestions. There's gonna be a lot of info, and suggestions given to you, and it may seem like an overload, but everyone that I've interacted with here have been informative and helpful. Good luck and have fun on this new adventure.

If you want something that is similar in size and shape to cigarettes, Vapor4Life and Smokeless Image are good places to look. They are both KR808d-1 type batteries.

The cartomizer goes on top of the battery (in the spot where a cigarette filter is located). Vapor4Life has a large variety of flavors (which you think you don't want, but just might like as many find they don't really enjoy tobacco flavors). They sell both pre-filled cartos and juice if you want to refill. Smokeless Image also offers cartomizers and juice, but a more limited selection. Start out with the 18mg nicotine cartos and see if you need to go up or down to satisfy you.

I smoked American Spirits, too, and found that I like a variety of flavors way more than the tobacco ones.

ETA - get a starter kit with multiple batteries! You will want to have at least 2 so you can charge one while you're using the other one.

One good place to start is the ECF Library and read through "The Wonderful World of Vaping", that'll give you an idea on where to start. If you stick with any of the suppliers listed on the main page you won't go wrong.

Good advice.

Also, since you want something that looks like the real thing, don't go crazy buying. Yes, get something good but contain yourself because chances are most likely you'll change your mind down the road.

And by the way---WELCOME!!!

+1 for Izabella's advice for a cigarette-looking PV. If you don't mind something the size of a sharpie pen you can get a Kgo kit for $45. It's like an Ego with more voltage (better draw, more smoking-like experience) and a longer lasting battery. These fall in the 'fat batt' category. Super easy to use; charge a battery, fill a cartomizer with juice, screw it on your battery and vape. A lot of people ask me about my PV. This is the best package at the best price I know of:

KGO kit
Box of cartomizers
Sample-sized juices

Hoosierecigsupply and breezesmokes (.com for each of those) sells them. I'd suggest some USA Mix juice so you can do all the shopping in one stop. 18 or 24mg. It's a tobacco flavor. There are great juice companies out there. The USA Mix is inexpensive and a good place to start. You can get overwhelmed with all the suppliers of juice. You'll get there. You might want to keep it simple in the beginning. Good luck.

There's always divorce...he he he... Just kidding. As far as a unit, a 808 with a cartomizer would be good because you fill it up only every 20-30 pulls. Be sure to get a drip tip because the little rubber caps they come with are a pain plus you can taste them. As far as tobacco flavored juice... I would reccomend Clouds of vapor's tobacco juice in 24mg strength, very real tobacco flavor and will get you through a jonze for an analog. Good luck!!!

I used the joye 510 kit to kick the ciggies and I still recommend it, but if I were to go back to a small unit, I think I would try the volt. It has some newer designs and it's been getting good reviews. It's sort of a one stop, easy to use system, with prefilled cartomizers (cart and atomizer combined) to get you going and the caromizers can be reused.

I highly recommend going to one of the so called 'fat battery' models though. They're really not that much bigger and battery performance is so much better. Check out hoosierecigsupply for the kgo. It has an 1100mah battery that will drive the new duel coil cartomizer for several hours. The kgo, some duel coil cartos and some juice and you're all set.

edit. btw, Welcome, congratulations twice, and the best of luck to you.

I still say finish reading "The Wonderful World of Vaping" and make up your own mind, I don't use cartomizers, I've tried them but never liked the trouble of trying to refill them. I still use atomizers and cartridges, on an 801 penstyle e-cig or a Joye Stick. The regular cartomizers only hold about 1ml of e-liquid, my 801 cartridges hold 1.2ml and are a lot easier to refill with a syringe. Finish your reading then you'll be better armed to make an informed decision.

I recommend going over to YouTube and checking out DoctorVapor's Ecig 101 videos (linky). Some of the information is dated, but it's a good way to get a handle on the lexicon.

When I was new, someone recommended that I get a Riva 510 kit from Liberty-Flights.com (less than $35 for carrying case, 2 batteries, 5 cartos and a charger - use discount code "ecf" for 20% off) and 15 cartos and 2 drip tips for $20 from Crystal Clear Vaping (linky). You'll also need some liquid. I think it was very good advice, so I'm passing it along. I've been very, very happy.

Wow. There is a lot of information out there. I read through the info in the ELibrary and watched a couple of Doctor Vapor vids, and I am slowly starting to get a bit of this down, but had a few questions still.

I found this ranking list. Is this something I should trust for info?
Electronic Cigarette Reviews | Best E-cigarettes, Electric/e-cigs & More

Sounds like 510s and 808s are being talked about as fairly standard units. But how do I know which one to purchase? Seems like there are a lot of different 510s. Is there any difference?

What is the main difference between 2 and 3 piece units? 2 seems possibly easier tp use. Is that so?

I see that the starter kits come with pre-filled cartridges, but it sounds like in the long term it is cheaper to refill yourself, correct? It didn't look too tough in the vid I watched, so I'm guessing its not that big of a deal.

How long do typical batteries last, lets say in a 510? I realize that supermicros or micros wont last as long as bigger ones.

How long does it take to charge?

Do batteries every die out? How long does that take?

How long will a cartridge last before I need to refill it, and do they go bad and need to be replaced?

What about atomizers? Do they need to be replaced ever?

OK, that is probably it for now. Thanks again for the help

The little ones that look like a real cig are so popular with newbies, but they usually buy a bigger e-cig very soon after realizing their mistake. And the flavors are something that you will love after you try a few. By all means get tobacco flavored juice, but down the road you might like vaping blueberry cheesecake too. Good luck and happy vaping.

I'm a new vaper, but I'll do my best:

I wouldn't.

What is the main difference between 2 and 3 piece units? 2 seems possibly easier tp use. Is that so?

3-piece PVs have a battery, atomizer and cartridge (cart). 2-piece PVs have a battery and cartomizer (carto), which contains the e-liquid and the atomizer in one. It depends on whether you want to use carts or cartos.

I see that the starter kits come with pre-filled cartridges, but it sounds like in the long term it is cheaper to refill yourself, correct? It didn't look too tough in the vid I watched, so I'm guessing its not that big of a deal.

You will probably want to refill yourself, whether you use carts or cartos. It's very easy.

How long do typical batteries last, lets say in a 510? I realize that supermicros or micros wont last as long as bigger ones.

How long does it take to charge?

It depends on how much you vape. I can use my Riva 510 for several hours, and the kit came with two. I don't have an estimate for re-charging time, but it is faster if you use a wall charger. It's not all night or anything near.

How long will a cartridge last before I need to refill it, and do they go bad and need to be replaced?

Again, it depends on how much you vape and the size of the cart or carto. I can tell you that a single cart is nowhere near a pack of cigarettes, as I've seen claimed on commercials. As to lifetimes, I can't speak to carts, but I get nearly a week from a carto. You can also clean them to prolong the life.

For me a 510 is the better choice, they are better supported with cartomizers, clearomizers, giantomizers, tank systems and battery modifications then any other model of ecig IMO. Basically if you get a standard Joyee 510 (has many other names, penstyle is a generic term for them) or eGo 510 (again has many other brand names, riva is a popular rebrand of this ecig) pretty much everything else you get with the 510 suffix will work with them.

What is the main difference between 2 and 3 piece units? 2 seems possibly easier tp use. Is that so?

A 3 piece unit is basically 1 battery 1 atomiser and 1 polyfibre filled cartridge. They are still really common and most starter kits will come with this set up. However most long term Vapers in my experience will not stick with a 3 piece setup for long, most will ditch the atty and cartridges in favour of a cartomizer which is a atomiser and cartridge filler combined.

A 2 piece is a cartomizer as described above. So 1 battery and 1 cartomizer. Easier to get your head around and more consistent since you are effectively using a fresh atty with every cartomizer you use. They are easy to refill and can be used many times over with an eliquid refill.

I see that the starter kits come with pre-filled cartridges, but it sounds like in the long term it is cheaper to refill yourself, correct? It didn't look too tough in the vid I watched, so I'm guessing its not that big of a deal.

Filling either a polyfibre cart or a cartomizer is easy enough and will almost certainly be much more cost effective then buying pre-filled carts all the time.

How long do typical batteries last, lets say in a 510? I realize that supermicros or micros wont last as long as bigger ones.

A typical short pen style 510 battery will prob not last you longer then 2 hours. It really depends how much you vape though. If you only use it occasionally it may last longer. If your are a heavy smoker/Vaper then it wouldn't be very long. Ego 510 batteries will last you longer and any decent starter kit will always come with 2. If you really want a longer lasting 510 unit consider the riva 510 from liberty flights or a mega Titan 510 from totally wicked. Will easily last you all day and into the next.

How long does it take to charge?

This again depends, if you are only charging when they go completely dead they will take a while, anywhere between 2-4hrs I'd say. A personal charge kit for carrying and charging your batteries on the move is an option on most 510 models Inc the ego. This somewhat eliminates the prob with having no batteries when out and about.

Do batteries every die out? How long does that take?

Batteries in ecigs are disposable items. Milage varies dependant on use and care taken, but they should be lasting you 3months or so at least before you need to consider replacements.

How long will a cartridge last before I need to refill it, and do they go bad and need to be replaced?

Depends again on how much you smoke and how you smoke it. Heavy deep and often drags will see a standard polyfibre cart last equivalent to 5 cigarettes (roughly) cartomizers will last a little more 7 cigs worth perhaps? There lots of options though, tanks, XL versions of carts and cartomizers and many other options, some could last you days before needing a refill!

What about atomizers? Do they need to be replaced ever?

Atomisers are again considered disposable, but they are pretty hardy, especially 510 models in my experience. I've never actually broke one thorough vaping, only by cleaning! When you switch out to cartomizers/tanks/clearomizers etc this concern becomes less important since every replacement you put on has effectively got it's own atomiser. I wouldn't worry about this too much unless you only ever plan on sticking with polyfibre cartridges.

thanks for all the suggestions and help. I think I may start with the Riva 510 - Special Edition from liberty-flights. price seems decent, comes with 10 carts, 2 batteries, 2 atomizers, usb and regular chargers, and atomizer cone (not sure what that is). seems to have longer battery life too. I was thinking of getting 30ml of churchill 14mg tobacco liquid as well. How does this sound as a startup kit for a newbie? is there anything else i should consider getting as well? or am i totally headed in the wrong direction? thanks again.
