This simple modification works for me. Off course you can use any other method of supporting the filter, I just found the spring holds the filter material nicely in place and takes up less of the cart volume.


A few simple guidelines:
  • The hole size required depends on the viscocity of your liquid.
  • I used standard polyester filter - the same stuff used on a stove extractor filter.
  • The spring diameter should be such to support the filter material from being pushed down too much.
  • The small groove is to allow air from the atomizer to move towards the hole and prevent an air-lock - This part is the most important of it all. I made my groove about 1mm wide.
  • The pictures should explain everything.
Try it! Works great for me. Easy to clean - just rinse. Easy to fill, just drip. If it becomes air-logged, just blow into the hole.

Thought I'd show you my dual action Stimirol gum smoker / charger as well....

I took an old Stimirol chewing gum tube, fitted a 1300mAh Li-ion (protected circuit) battery, old atomizer fitting on a spring and a micro switch on the inside as well as an old atomizer fitting that sits on the side and glued it all together.

End result:
A mobile battery charger for the 180mAh and 250mAh batteries.
A nice fat battery for smoking two days non stop.

I can actually vape and charge at the same time! :p

Off course I made no effort in making the unit look pretty, but it works very nice. It charges 7 mini batteries and 5 of the 250mAh ones - on the go.

When I finished it, i found it a lot easier to just vape straight off the tube than charging and waiting for batteries. But you never know when you want to put the darn thing in your pocket and rather take out an elegant mini to impress the girl.....

BTW: Try the little groove and hole method described above if you're having vacuum problems with the plug and BlueFoam methods. It really works and is so simple to do. I suck mine dry every time and refilling is a walk in the park.

Glad it works on yours too harpo. The most important feature imho is the little air "groove". As the atomizer element vaporizes the liquid from the cart, air needs to move into the cart to replace the liquid volume drained. If this doesn't happen - especially on a tight fitting cart, a vacuum prevents proper liquid flow to the element. The groove eliminates this problem and it doesn't cause the liquid to drain into the atty causing an overflow which eventually ends up in your mouth....

I did my plug just a little different. I didn't make it with the long tip like yours. I just cut mine square and folded it in half and placed it on top of the spring.

Let me know - will take mine out - precious volume you know - gotta be at least one more drag from it!

I pull the plug when I refill and get 13 to 14 drops. I'll try refilling with the plug in and let you know. I always find it easier and quicker to pull the plug.

I just tried using this with the BFD mod. I made a hole on either side of the cart, but on the FLAT sides, without a groove. My thinking is that the flat sides have unrestricted air flow. If the holes aren't too big, it won't leak because the foam is in the top of the cart where the holes are. So far this is working well.
Update.
After using this, it didn't really help much at all. I'm sure that your original method works better.

The hole must be below the filter material to allow air directly to the liquid reservoir.

The viscosity of the PG fluid compared to air makes it impossible to leak through the air vent groove!

Just as a matter of interest - PG liquids contain in the region of approximately 80% propylene glycol and the viscosity of the liquid would be between 0.015Pa.s to 0.020Pa.s. Air for that matter has a viscosity of 17.4x10-6Pa.s at 20ºC - 1000 times less than the PG liquid! 8-o

The vacuum in the reservoir (caused by the suction of the atomizer evaporating PG liquid) will draw air through the path of least resistance - the air vent groove in this case.

I have actually made a cart with the air vent cut all the way through the plastic and it still works fine. See the attached pictures.
