So I bought a Reo Mini 2.1 and an RM2 this weekend. It just came today. My MVP 2 and KFL combo was getting too big to lug around. I figured with the Reo, I could get all of the flavor and vapor of my KFL without the bulk.

After my first build on the RM2 (3 mm silica and 32 gauge Kanthal, a 3/4 wrap came out to about 1.85 ohms), this is just a bit disappointing. I enjoy a cooler vape and do not like cotton wicks. Why is my KFL beating out a dripper by a mile in both flavor and vapor production? This should have been an easy build for me.

I don't know what to do. Can anyone recommend me a rda outside of the RM2.

Have you tried building a micro-coil with the silica? It's tricky but can be done. It may be a little more difficult with the 32 awg though. I recommend some 30 awg with 10-12 wraps on a 1/16 drill bit (for your cooler vape). Should put you around 1.5 ohms.

I've had some success pulling the silica through a micro-coil by separating the strands and using a piece of wire to pull them through doubled over. Three strands should do it (making six total inside the coil).

Please don't give up on the RM2 so easy!

Coil placement has a LOT to do with flavor and vapor. One thing too a micro coil would allow you more coils with that 32 gauge. I know you said you did not like cotton. Well it wouldn't hurt to try it once in the RM2.

A coil that meters at 1.85 should not be too hot for you.

Describe the throat hit and the heat you are getting. If you spend a little time here then there are lots of people that can help you get that magic vape only a REO and RM2 offer.

I have to agree with everyone else. Micro coil even with 32 and try some cotton. I use 30 gauge and cotton. Use to use silica but cotton hands down is best.. Good luck. The rm2 is hte best atty I have had. It all depends on the coil and placement of the coil. Keep the coil low for softer th and higher for more th.

I don't have an RM2 and I'm still waiting on my Grand to get here, but one thing you might look into is a long drip tip, maybe even like a BD60 from captivape or something. It will put you further from the coil, which makes for a cooler vape.

Also, 1.85 on a 3.7 battery makes for a low wattage, so that might account for the low vapor production. Is this your first mechanical mod? Because if it is, it will take some time to get used to the voltage range of the battery. Fresh, it starts at 4.2 and goes down as you vape, so if you have a nearly-dead battery you can have low vapor production too.

the Reo and RM2 need a lower ohm than any of the VV/VW unit I had before, but they produce much better vapor and flavor. Try going lower on your ohms and use a micro coil. I used to use 2 to 2.5ohm attys on my other mods, now on the Reo I'm rocking .8 to 1.2 ohms.

32 gauge is hard to get lower ohms with a single strand. I had to double the wire and wrap a dual roll coil to get a 1.2 ohm coil, and it hits great. I prefer larger gauge and I'm playing with 28 and 26 gauge now.

Here's a dual wrap 32 gauge 1.2 ohm coil.

Just my two cents. I tried out a "mini" coil the other day. Sometimes I like a cooler vape as well and I was pretty happy with it. I do use cotton, but with an 14 or 15 ga needle (I think that's what it was. It's one of the blunt luer lock needles that comes with the cleaning kit from myfreedomsmokes.) I would think you could at least get a 2mm silica through there. There's someone on this board that does silica wicks with his microcoils--just separates the strands to do it.

Anyhoo, my 28ga mini coil metered to about 1.2 ohms with, I think, 8 wraps? I would think you could do a similar wrap with 32 ga and end up at about 2-2.5 ohms. I've never used 32ga, but 30 works good for micros for me. Hope you have luck with it. If not, send me a pm--I'll buy the rm2

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will try a micro coil filled with strands of silica! I am not giving up on my Reo by any means. I know that the Reo and the RM2 is a great combo. For whatever reason, it just isnt giving me much of a vape. It is really hot, but not much vapor.

No worries...ya just need to experiment to find what works best for you. For what it's worth I was never able to get a standard 4/5 wrap silica coil to work well in the Reo (not that I put much effort into it...lol). Throw the same coil in an IGO-L though and it rocks.

I've found getting the coil as close to the air hole as possible really helps flavor and vapor.

Hi Jazzi Mike. I agree you should definitely go lower ohms as Filthy Beast suggested. On the Mini probably around 1.2 ohms. For less throat hit have the micro coil lower to the floor. It took me some time and lots of help from other Reonauts to get it right, so do not be afraid to post pictures of your coils and describe your problems to get help. For silica in the micro coil I just separate the strands of my 3mm silica (as others have suggested) and pull them through as in the pictures below. I end up with a 2mm wick in there.

A "hot" vape is often the result of insufficient or misplaced airflow. As you explore your options, you may get to the point where you'll want to try enlarging your air hole a bit. Incrementally! As others have mentioned, your coil should not be snug against your posts; rather, out toward the rim of your atty (micro-coils don't suffer from hot legs the way larger coils with sparse wraps might). Also, make sure your coil is up off the floor of the atty, the center of your coil should be up as high as your air hole is. Lastly, of course, make sure your airhole is aligned with your coil (horizontally, spinning the cap around the atty-wise): the air hole should be centered on the coil from the side-to-side perspective as well.

So last night, I took a 1.5mm piece of Ekowool. I carefully wrapped a coil that was very close together alas micro coil. While it was not pretty, it started glowing like a micro when I fired it. I took a few hits off of it as a dripper and it hit pretty well. I tested it out this morning on my Reo. 1.7 ohms, 30 gauge Kanthal, and 1.5 mm Ekowool.

thank you all. I knew I just needed to experiment some more.
