I have decided to give up smoking in the sense I want to stop lighting up, so I have researched and bought Joytech eGo-C kit, along with some of their tobacco liquid. I have put the thing together and started using it, however I find the vaper makes me cough uncontrollably. So I feel I have not had a cigarette effectively and still want a smoke. Previously I used to smoke approx 15 aday, and have been smoking approx 35 years.

Am I doing something wrong, I don't see other people have coughing fits when they use e-Cigs?

What PG/VG ratio and what nicotine level is your juice?

I just got my mom started into vaping. When she first tried mine (24mg nicotine, which is pretty high) she had a coughing fit. So when I ordered all of her stuff for her, I got the same exact juice as I had that she tried, only in 16mg nicotine. She doesn't cough at all from it. It's a much smoother throat hit.

I don't know what liquid you are vaping but some of the different liquids have a different throat hit and do the same to me... I know there is a coffee flavor that just tears me up everytime I try it... I like the flavor of it but the TH just kills me, its like I just sucked down a mouth full of coal dust. Try a different juice and try a different inhale method... long, slow and steady... just try different things till you find the method that works for you.

I smoked for 35 years, ultra-lights in the end. although I started with too high a concentration, I didn't find nic strength made me cough. it was the pg/vg ratio when I started trying specialty e-liquids. my experience was the opposite of others - higher vg made me cough.

Ditto here. I found that too much VG made my sinuses act up and it felt like my throat was getting coated, too! I put a little in my DIY..just for a extra dollop of vapor...but for me PG is better, and even without VG I get plenty of vapor.

Hubby coughed when he first started vaping, too...with the cig-a-likes. When he tried the X2 however he found he could vape without as much coughing. Now he has a couple of APVs and gets along fine with 18mg. and all PG juice.

Throat hit is what we call the thing that is making you cough.

Nicotine is probably the biggest factor in creating throat hit, but 11mg is already plenty low enough, so that's probably not it.
The next thing on the list is using a juice with a high PG ratio, so using a juice with more VG and less PG would help.

Another thing is to make sure to stay hydrated and drink lots of liquids.
Vaping dehydrates you and that can make your throat more sensitive to the throat hit.

Also, how you inhale can make a big difference.
Most people draw the vapor into their mouths and then inhale into the lungs, rather than inhaling directly into the lungs while taking a drag.

And some liquids just have more throat hit than others, possibly due to what flavorings are used?
