Welcome! Deciding to stop smoking is the first and perhaps most important step. What kind of e-cig depends a lot on what you want out of it. Try starting here Beginners E-Cig Tutorial first. :)

Edit: We'll answer your specific questions after that.

Your second question, "are they the same as the real thing". The short answer is no. There is no smoke and you will not taste smoke. It does give you nicotine, "un-burned" tobacco flavors and just about everything else. Many, many of us have come off of cigs using this.

Edit2: misread your 2nd question. Yes, they CAN substitute for cigarettes.

Welcome to ECF!!

These things most definitely can replace cigarettes, or at least the nicotine from cigs.
The best seems to vary from person to person, everyone has their own favorites. :)

The simple KR808 or ego style are good starter kits, and you can find what features,
vapor you like or don't in an PV. Try one, then your question can be "what's the best
for more / less <fill in the blank>". :) Much easier question the what's the best....

Not enough information.

How many and what kind of cigarettes do you smoke?
How long each day are you away from power at one stretch?
Do you want something slimmish or a big strong hit and long battery charge?

100mah is 1 hour of moderate vaping.

Popular slim ecigs are Joye brand 510 manual (2 sizes, 180mah and 280mah). This a 3-piece but plenty of blank cartomizers are available to use it as a more consistent-vaping 2-piece, few prefilled cartomizers

And KR808D-1 manual (Vapor4Life or SmokelessImage Volt) - 2 sizes are mainly used the 180mah/220mah shorty aka 65mm batteries, or the 280/320mah standard aka 78mm batteries (the Volt style claims the longer mah but has a pretty tiny button and a shorter safety cutoff - you would have to break up long drags into 2 drags). These are 2-pieces so there are plenty of prefilled cartomizers and a good selection of blanks. For testing juices a DSE901 atomizer can be use with a drip tip if you have manual batteries (or w/ cartridges if you have auto batteries)

I do not recommend auto batteries. Most people here use and recommend manuals. They are harder to damage or kill with juice leaks, make it easier to get a good hit, won't turn on accidentally from wind or vibration.

---

For much more battery charge and the ability to use the hotter low resistance atomizers and cartomizers, skip slim ecigs and look at things like Ego and Riva 510 at Liberty0Flights.com

elaineshere,

You have come to a great place to get inspired and info. There is so much great and helpful info on this forum, it's just awesome. And you will get so much support from great folks here.

A good set of e-cig kit and a desire to rid of cigarette can sit really well together. I got my e-cig about 3 weeks ago without intention to cut analog out right away, thought I would take a gradual approach; turned out, after 24 hours with e-cig, I could not turn back to analog and I intend to keep it this way :) I am very pleased that I checked out this forum that helped me take this awesome step!!!

Stick around, read on, we're all here to help and support each other. All the best!

Welcome to ECF! The community here is wonderful and there are a ton of knowledgeable people willing to help. There is a *ton* of information to absorb.

Dormouse covered the 2 popular basic setups. The 501, and kr808. The kit you decide to purchase is up to you, but researching those two is a good start. If you start researching mods, it can be enough info to make your head spin. My advice would be to keep it simple at first, but don't skimp on the research. Everyone has different opinions, but the one that is going to end up mattering is yours.

I ordered a kr808 first. The Volt, from Smokeless Image. It's very popular and lots of people are very happy with it, but it wasn't for me. I've got a 510 setup coming. It's called an eGo. Its got a larger battery (less time between recharges) and is priced similar to the Volt.

Like I said before, do some research. Google up some video reviews of models you are interested in. When you do decide on what to purchase, make sure you order plenty of juice to go with your kit, or enough pre-filled cartridges/cartomizers to last you a while. A starter kit usually only comes with 5 pre-filled carts or cartos, and running out would be bad!

My first foray into vaping was with some off brand 'replacement cigarette' from a gas station convenience store ... I don't recommend going that route ;)

I did more research after that and went with a 510 T battery because of the longer battery life. Most of my friends at work like the plain 510 or 808 (similar diameter to a regular cig), but I can't give up the heat and hit of the bigger batt.

I hate cartridges, but a standard atomizer with a drip tip can work well. I've pretty much gone over to cartomizers/clearomizers (atomizer + cartridge in one piece) which hold more juice than any standard cartridge.

Some people love the tank atomizers, which use tubes to hold more juice and don't include any cottony filler...but many people have had trouble with these so I'd stay away until you're more familiar with everything.

I've only been vaping for a couple of weeks, but I'm already looking for a more non standard mod that includes variable voltage settings so I can better control my hit.

Vaping did get me completely off smoking, 1st day I had maybe 10 cigs, 2nd day 3, 3rd day 1 and none since ... now they taste horrible, smell horrible and generally turn me off, how crazy is that for a 20 year 2PAD smoker?

Good luck with everything!
