Yes, variable power (volts, watts) are definitely worth it.

if your just getting started the ego twist style batteries are great to start out on
they are small and pocket friendly and you can adjust your volts.

It does sound like a wicking problem...if yu cant taste your juices there is an issue with the wick you are using

Best battery well you will get a lot of different answers. One of the all around best is the mvp2. It can be had for about 40 bucks vv vw it is a box mod which will last you all day long
