New to vaping. Am I too cautious or is it the right way?

Hm. It seems to work pretty well. I made sure to prime it and everything before i actually filled the tank. It hasn't leaked on me so far. As for the cartomizer, I have been reading around this forum and once it tastes "burnt" I have to change it?

If you're using it alone, without the tank. Yep, once it tasted burnt it is burnt. Top off early and top off often. The tank takes care of that problem for you.

But no carto will last forever. You'll know when to put a new carto in; the flavor and vapor production begin to go south after a while. How long a while? Depends on your tolerance of bad taste. To me, 10 ml for a carto alone is tops, 15-20 ml for a carto in a tank.

Nothing really wrong with carto tanks, but you can find great deals on Boge 510s if you don't mind punching them yourself.

I used to change my carto once a week but I think you could stretch it longer be careful not to chain vape giving the carto a chance to wick between hits and also shop around I thing you could get those cartos for about $6 a 5 pack if you look around a little

I myself have been getting away frof cartos..flavor is reduced IMO I have been using drip attys ..but they are costly so rba,s been using 2 so far like my vision eternity works well rebuilds easy you can even buy pre built coils for a buck each but you can rebuild for cents
i purchased 100 ft of kanthal wire on ebay for 8 bucks and 10 ft silica wick for 8 dollars as well thats abought 40 builds before i need more wick the wire should last for over 250 rebuilds but it can be tricky messy but its worth it to ME
so explore your options

I would have to suggest something like a T3 for you since its so simple to use and can be found almost anywhere for under $10. Carts just dont seem to last long enough to make it worthwhile

I am also using a C-Twist and I would advise you to avoid the stardust style clearomizers at all costs. I went through several different brands and some that were rebuildable and never had good results with flavor, vapor production, or durability. I also had trouble with the Kanger MT3s leaking on me but I do use VG heavy liquids so I'm not sure if that could have been the issue.
