So I'm new to vaping and getting burnt taste.

Few weeks back I picked up a Redds kit, and tried vaping with that, but after a few draws I was getting a burnt taste, and I figured it was just the cartomizers running dry... got tired or refilling it each time so I went with a Innokin iClear16 Clearomizer with a eGo twist.

The tobacco flavor tastes fine (had it at 4.4v) . but when I went to vape the cotton candy flavor, it tasted burnt.
I lowered the voltage down to 3.2 but it still tasted burnt.
so I'm wondering is it the e-liquid?
or because I had the voltage to high initially and it will stay burnt until I clean it out?
I really liked that flavor and had ordered 25ml more.

I'm a bit lost on this, and any help would be appreciated.

This might help. Top-coiled clearomizers such as the Innokin iCLear are fighting gravity to feed juice to the heating coil head. Unless you frequently tip or swirl the juice around inside the tank, the wicks can get dry causing a burnt taste or dry hits.
I laid the clearomizer on its side, and this should get the wicks really wet...
I would try vaping it a little longer to see if you can get past the burnt taste, or try cleaning out your clearomizer.
I'll give it a bit and then try again.
if I still get the burnt taste then I'll clean it out and try again.

edit: had cartomizers instead of clearomizer

Cartomizers are not position dependent. It won't matter if you lay them on their side or not.

A burnt taste with a cartomizer is due to the following:

  • You didn't prime the carto enough at the beginning. How well you do this determines how the carto will perform for its entire life. The polyfill filler material has to be absolutely soaked; it should look like a slushy drink on top (without any juice in the air hole). Shake the carto like a thermometer; this acts like a centrifuge. Then add more juice, shake it again. When it will take no more juice, it's ready.

  • You are using too low ohm (resistance) of a carto for your particular battery.

  • You allowed the carto to run dry at some point before topping it off. Once you get a burnt taste in a carto it is ruined. You will never get that taste out. Start over.

+1 for the tilt & swirl with the iclear16 (or any top coil), especially when its less than half full. Try doing that after every few puffs. With the cartomizers, new ones can give you a burnt taste at first if you don't prime the atomizer. I'm not sure if either of these things are causing the issue you're having, though.

What percentage of VG is in your problem juice? Heavy PG juices are very thick, and sometimes you can have wicking problems. I've found this to be especially problematic with clearo-type set ups. So if you're running a heavy VG ratio, try going with more PG next time if you're not sensitive to it. If you are, some people thin out the VG with grain alcohol or distilled water.

Then again, some juices just burn really easily. I've found this to be a problem with in the past. Sometimes you have to be careful to keep everything very wet with certain juices. And with top fed clearos, it's easy to get a dry hit when you're running low. It could be your coil too. Try cleaning the device. If you go too long without cleaning, everything tastes burnt.

Last, what sort of res are you running? If you're running low res, you might want to try going with something a little more standard, or even higher.

If it happens again try to add another wick on top of the existing one.
What type of wick would you recommend?

Well I'm using 50/50 Pg/VG juice.
After cleaning it the burnt taste went away.
so what I figured I would do is keep filling the clearo during the day, and then try to clean it out about once every 48 hours.

I just got a bunch of new e-Liquids, all 50/50 mix so I think I'll be cleaning it out frequently as I try each new flavor.

what do you mean by res?
