New to vaping - having some real problems

Good Morning All,

First, I'm really excited to join the community, and thank you ahead of time for any help you can provide!

I'm working my way off of smoking, and I've found vaping to work extremely well. With that said, I started with a more simplistic machine and have recently bought a more versatile (expensive) machine which is not giving me the results I was hoping to achieve. Allow me to elaborate:

Goal: Get the same general sensation with more vape smoke and no pain in the throat.

Old Unit and setup:

• Works well, no burning of throat, would just like more vape smoke
• eGo AIO - All in One
• 0.6 coil
• 12mg or 6mg (had no impact on burning throat)

New Unit and Setup:

• Burning throat, more vape smoke, juices poping into mouth
• KangerTech Top Box Mini Starter Kit
• 0.5 coil
• 12mg and 6mg (both hurt the throat)
• 23 volts

The above lays out the scenario. The eGo works great, doesn't burn, and I can use any level of nicotine without much notice to the sensations. I bought the Top Box, and haven't been able to get the same smooth feel to the hit. Regardless of "mouth to lung" or straight inhalation, the device burns my throat and the juices bubble and spatter into my mouth and throat. So there are two problems (burning and spattering juice), and I'm thinking they may be related. I spoke with the guy at the vape store, and he had some thoughts:

• Not using premium juice, so it's soaking into the cotton too easily (causing both issues)
• Wrong combination of coil and volts (I've experimented with all sorts of combinations, no luck)
• I also think a different tip or some type of filter might stop the spattering juices

I would really appreciate any insights you can provide!

What is the PG to VG Ratio of the e-Liquid(s) that you are using/tried?

I believe they said it's a 50/50. They recommended a 70/30 or 80/20 if I remember. They don't carry the premium in regular Vanilla, and I'm really stuck on that flavor. I also posted in the juice section looking for assistance on finding regular vanilla in a premium.

Yeah... It could be that there is Too Much PG in the e-Liquid for you.

PG carries Flavor and gives some Throat Hit. But if there is Too Much PG, it can be Harsh and Irritating. Especially for Someone who is New and might be Hitting their e-Cigarette a little too fast.

I would Try getting some 30%PG | 70%VG or 20%PG | 80%VG in 6mg/ml. It should be a Smoother.

And try to take Longer - Slower Hits vs. Shorter - Faster Hits.

Sometimes it's just the type of tank and coils. You're using 2 different ones?

i'd recommend 70/30 in a tank because if you go higher than that then you risk dry hits and burning your wicks.

Premium juice is just a ruse to get you to spend more money; there is nothing about a juice that makes it wick better than another other than the VG/PG ratio.

i'm guessing 23 volts is a typo, else i want a device like that! Can't help in your vanilla quest i'm afraid because i make my own juice.

I'm guessing that's 23 watts? If you started the tank at that power level, you've possibly burnt the wick. If so, that's the cause of the burning feel/taste.

A new head/coil and starting at a much lower power level until you're sure the device is wicking well (small bubbles in the juice after a moderately long draw), then step up slowly, maybe 1/2 watt at a time.

It takes a while to figure things out, as in weeks and months, not days. Stick with that first device for now because it works for you. You've found this message board. Read and ask questions and keep using your first device. If you really need more clouds and more power that can come in time. Patience.

Sorry, I make my Own e-Liquids. And use a Lot of Unflavored and Hint of Flavor (HOF) so I'm not sure who would be a Good Company to go with for a Vanilla flavor.

Also Remember that the moving to a Higher VG Ratio is a Likely Solution to your Problem. And as r77r7r mentioned, sometimes it is the Tank or Coil that is the Problem.

Highly doubt it's your juice. Same juice in AIO was ok.
Burnt coil?
Are you adjusting your AirFlow control?
Are you staying in power mode with the .5 ohm Clappy coil?

FYI. a fully charged cell/.6 ohm will pull 29.4 watts on your AIO.
Be sure to correctly prime your Kanger coil..

This may be a bit boring, but if you have a vape setup that works and is satisfying, you may have already found your "sweet spot" with your original setup. There are almost endless varieties of mod/topper combinations, and each of us has different needs and sensitivities to heat, power and flavor. There is an urge in most of us starting out to try different combinations because it's fun and interesting, as well as keeping us involved in something to replace the itch to smoke. Perhaps the luckiest ones are those who find an effective replacement for smoking and just continue to do it.

Vendors and manufacturers keep pumping out more powerful devices and variations of toppers, hoping to keep us buying. Those who found a setup that they are satisfied with aren't very profitable. Getting you to invest in "premium" liquid is just a sales tactic in my opinion. There is also a bit of peer pressure in the vaping community. For the many here on ECF that have made it a hobby, they like to try most all new setups and flavors not because they need to, but because it's fun.

Just as some married folks get a bored or have a "seven year itch", sometimes new and different are appealing just for the sake of change, even if what we have is perfectly fine.

I'm sure with enough adjustment you can eventually make your new setup work well enough to fit your style. Whether that is interesting enough or just a bother is up to you. I chased new and different setups for a few years until my throat irritation drove me to stick with smoother simpler setups that don't produce bigger plumes of vapor but keep me from thinking of smoking.

Good luck staying off the smokes, whatever style you find works best for you!

I really appreciate all the reply's, and the words did not fall on deaf ears. I bought a new coil to see if the old is burnt out, bought a higher vg juice with lower nicotine, and I bought new coils for the old system to ensure I use it while I tweak this new system. I can see how this can become addictive; after all, I'm a smoker Fingers crossed, and thank you!

There is a huge difference between the toptank and the AIO. I am more of a lower wattage tootle puffer type of vaper and I fall in the same position as you.

The AIO is just OK and I use it some for out and about, but it is not all that satisfying. You could try the .5ohm cubis coils, but that would lower your battery time and consume more liquid.

If you kind of like the AIO, you could try a cubis tank (which is what is built into the AIO). You could run that on the Kanger box where you would be able to adjust the wattage and try different cubis coils (.5 .6 1.0 1.5 ohm).

The Topbox has always been too harsh for me with any of the premade coils. I get better results with the rba head built at higher ohms and run down around 10 watts, but it still kind of blows my head off. I would certainly recommend you switch out that tailpipe they call a drip tip. You could try the grey drip tip from the AIO (the one with the spiral baffles) and that might cut down on the spit back.

At the end of the day, the two devices have you stuck between two worlds...the subohm word and the tootle puffer world.

You're spot on, that's the exact situation I'm facing. I'm also realizing I prefer mouth to lung, which the topbox doesn't do well (at least with the setup I'm using). I'll look into a cubis tank, and see what I can find. What part of the device is the rba head?

I have the original subtank which came with an rba deck so you can build your own coils. I assumed that the toptank also came with one. It looks like this:

It did, got it! So good news, with new juice (3), with 85/15 ratio, the corkscrew tip, and a new coil, it's working well now. A big part of the problem was running a 12 nicotine Way too much for a device like this. Feels good not smoking cigs anymore. Thank you everyone!
