Firstly, hello! 1st post and all.

Right. So a few days ago i made the leap into the world of vaping, and i'm really glad i did! Got me down to a single roll up a day at most already, incredible stuff. Really excited to get into the hobby too! Looks like something i will find myself spending way too much money on though :p

So here's the thing, and its a thing apprently alot of newbies are getting pulled into. I go into my local shop, and give him the "I want to get into this, what should i get?". Shop man responds with "Well you want one of these fancy Sub ohm jobbies. All the vapour, all the flavour.". So i pick up what he reccomends. In this case, a Subtank Nano and an Istick 50W.

Timeskip to now. I've played around with different wattages, different juice and different techniques. It was a bit harsh to begin with (understandable cos Sub ohm coils run hotter (i think, right?)) so i did a little reading, got me some 100vg juice, which i love!. Plenty of airflow with the hit, no mouth to lung buisness and running at 15W and i'm pretty happy with it. Thing is, in my search for information i discovered some pretty alarming saftey warnings about sub ohm vaping, so here i am laden with worries and questions.

Alot of people have warned that you should be very conciouss of battery saftey when sub ohming, as the low resistance puts a greater load on the battery. Should i be concerned about this with all the shop bought mods, i.e my Istick 50w? Can i just stick any old coil with any old mod and vape happily? ( i get the feeling this isn't the case)

Secondly, i saw a few vids and posts about superheating your liquid, particularly that a single .5 ohm coil would get way too hot and turn the liquid into crazy things (freaking formaldehyde?). This is exactly what came in my Subtank nano, a single .5ohm coil!. I feel like they wouldn't just sell that if it was dangerous, but then if it sells, i suppose they're gonna sell it.

Sorry for the long post! I felt some context was important.

Find the coils and settings that you enjoy.
Could be 1.8 ohms at 12 watts.
Or .5 ohms at 30 watts.
If you practice safety. You will be fine.
Use trusted batteries and devices and don't fall into the the frame of mind that you must super sub ohm.
I don't know about super heating liquid.
I do vape at .5 ohms, and have for a couple years. My Lungs feel great!

Welcome to ecf!

Welcome!

I am fairly new myself, and don't know much about the issues that have brought up, but people in this forum that are very knowledgeable will respond (and this way, I will learn as well).

I vape at .5 ohms without problems, and I think you are referring to the kind of trouble you can get into if you are using mechanical mods instead of regulated ones (like your istick 50 or my coolfire IV).

Anyway, welcome to the forum and happy vaping!

Generally speaking, if you are using a regulated mod (electronic processor) and not a mechanical mod (no electronics), you'll be safer. Regulated mods have protection circuitry which should keep you out of trouble. They will refuse to fire in an unsafe condition and provide an error message on the display screen.

Mechanical mods are strictly just battery holders, with no built-in protections. You have to have the basic safe battery knowledge and Ohm's Law knowledge in your head to vape sub-ohms safely with a mechanical mod.

Having said that, there have been some worrisome issues with the iStick 50 watt model. iStick 50 watt exploded This has not been just an isolated single incident, and multiple incidents have been documented across multiple ecig forums. Just a heads up.

Epic, cheers guys! Glad to know i haven't put my foot in it.

Looks like Re-wicking will be tomorrows adventure, just spied my coil whilst refilling and it's hella gunky. Gonna swing by ye olde vappe shoppe to get some spares for the Nano just in case though :p

Also cheers for the heads up on the Istick50, Gonna charge it through my Pc with the USB from now on so i can keep an eye on it.

regulated mods normally have some type of safety cutoff programmed into it to protect the circuit and battery.... and as far as getting formaldehyde... that requires burning your juice and you will know exactly just before that happens, for its no ordinary puff of vapor, its the most foul, cruel, puff of vapor you ever set eyes on... ;) ( ever lit the filter end of a ciggie and inhale it?? well its worse than that)

if you plan to do mechs, then you need to pay extra special careful attention to your builds since there is no safety feature built into the mod...

vape safe, vape happy...

In general, say on a mechanical unregulated device, your leaning toward the side of caution is warranted. But from reading this section, you are in the green zone, yes the tank coil is a sub-ohm coil, but even on a mech with a decent battery, even a 20amp continuous drain rated Samsung 25R, a 0.5ohm coil will not overly tax that battery with regular use. You are on a regulated, processor controlled iStick50watt set at 15watts, you are golden, the iStick is pulling just enough current and voltage out of its battery to barely raise any alarm or concern, only issue you would have is a faulty coil dead shorting. Still +10 Cookies for asking for answers you didn't know, battery safety and such, the worst question is the one never asked.
