Please don’t judge, I really am new to vaping...and even smoking. I know most of you may say “why did you even start?” I honestly liked the culture of vaping and wanted a new way to relax.

A few things about me. I got a iJust2 starter vape. I specifically wanted to get 0 nicotine in any liquid I buy. So I bought some juice that didn’t have any nicotine in it. I just put liquid in the right place, I’ve seen all the tutorials on how to fill it. *I will say that I didn’t “saturate” the coil/Cotten* I did a hit and all I tasted was what I think is called a “throat hit”. It was gross. It felt like there was a scar building to the back of my throat. So here are my questions:

1. Is that what it’s suppose to “taste” like?
It literally felt like the devil farted in the back of my throat. I guess my expectations (because I’ve never smoked before) was that it would be...more flavor vapor? Not smoky? Was that naive of me to think it would just taste like flavored air?

Please be gentle. I’m fragile. But please educate me, I really don’t know what I am doing.

My first thought is either the coil was still too dry or the power setting on your device was too high ( I'm not familiar with yours so I don't know if it has a variable power mode or not where you can change wattage or voltage).

No, that’s not what it should be like. Saturating your coil is very important so I would advise a little patience next time. Hope you didn’t burn your wick or it’s ruined :(

Your draw technique might have been wrong for you also, next time just draw into your mouth and not down your throat and see if you notice more flavor, exhale from your nose or mouth. Good luck :)

To prime a coil, start by dripping a couple drops on any exposed cotton you see (it can sometimes be down inside it, depending on the coil.) WITHOUT firing the mod, start with some gentle pulls at 0 watts, and work your way upward in 2-4 watt increments or so, while firing the mod. You can slowly work your way up to a comfortable wattage, at a vape "taste" you find you enjoy. If it's a fixed wattage setup, do the same, but let it sit saturated in eliquid longer and take more 0 watt priming puffs, and some shorter draws and inhales to break in the coil.

Unless you have a tobacco flavored juice (and even then) it shouldn't taste like burning death. I think you underprimed the coil, and potentially overestimated the wattage. You can look at a coil (you will probably need to replace the one you have) and it should have in tiny letters printed both the resistance of the coil, and the manufacturer's "recommendations, which are just that, recommendations, but they may give you a bit of a sense of what wattage the coil is rated for. It's fine to be under the recommendation, but going over it will likely shorten coil life (and if an unprimed coil, kill it with one puff, as you've found out).

Some juices don't play well with some tanks, but just start there for now. Hopefully you can get some decent flavor going, and don't keep vaping the coil. It's burnt, and will give off potentially undesirable byproducts. Discard all the liquid in the tank too, it's never going to taste right, and thoroughly clean your tank (including all 0 rings, "bunt" can cling to them too. Make sure you are paying attention as you disassemble so everything goes back in the right place.

Best of luck and welcome to ECF.

As everyone else said you need to prime the coil first. Even then I close the airflow and inhale in to sort of pull the liquid into the coil. Do this without hitting the fire button.
You weren’t wrong to think it should taste like flavored air. Juices vary, some taste just like the flavor they’re supposed to and some not so much. It depends because some flavorings mimic their real life counterpart very well and some aren’t as authentic. With the subjectivity of taste you’re really gonna have to try the juices to find what you like. One man’s best can be another man’s bust. Good luck and I hope your second try turns out better than your first.

Agree with the above comments. You likely didn't prime the coil adequately (if at all) prior to putting it into the tank and then filling the tank.

The cotton will burn if the coil fires and the coil was not properly primed. Just like lighting some cotton with a match. Once the cotton burns, its ruined. The liquid that's in the tank may be ruined, too.

    • Replace the coil and prime it with enough juice - the cotton will look like a slushy drink when properly primed. Take your time and do it right.
    • Put the new primed coil into the tank.
    • Add new e-liquid; the old e-liquid likely has a burnt taste from your first coil.
    • Lower the wattage setting before you fire the coil. You can increase the wattage setting after a reasonable break-in period, say half of a tank.

    :offtopic:

That "taste" is your throat telling you not to suck anything other than air past it. :)
I want to bring this up because it was honestly the last thing I thought of but I was a smoker for 17 years steady and was experienced long before that. So the OP is a non-smoker basically and a beginner vapor.
My lungs and throat and mentality were adapted and in fact wanted something harsh when I started vaping.
What does it feel like to vape as a non-smoker either mtl or dtl??:|

your throat is going to be more sensitive than a smoker's would, not used to inhaling something hot, so do as suggested and use lowest wattage you can to start. ( if it's producing vapor, it should be ok). Take small draws into your mouth and then to lungs...don't try to rip it and get a huge cloud to start. Also, some people are sensitive to PG, what ratio is your juice? (if you don't know, name the brand & flavor)

Wishing you all the luck. The taste of flavored air may be correct to you and others but not to all folks.

My wife has the same setup and absolutely loves it. The problem you are having is definitely saturation issue. As the I just 2 fully charged runs at 50 Watts and as you use up your battery depletes to about 30 Watts you don't have the option of gently breaking in your coil. Making sure your coil head is Thoroughly saturated before installation and then while covering the air holes doing some dry heads without firing the button will help draw more liquid into the coil. Then let it sit for 30 minutes. This is the only way we have found to Prime this unit properly. It is a great machine and when we are unable to purchase replacement it will be a sad day for my girl. As I said she absolutely loves it she sleeps with it like it's a teddy bear. She wakes up periodically during the night and I can hear the snap crackle of her taking a toke or two before drifting back off. She has also been successful at eliminating the stinkies. Again it is a great machine and the coils are not very expensive but you do have to be mindful as you do not have wattage control. Sorry for the ramble. Hope you enjoy your device

I got it to work! It was just the coil not being saturated enough (Rookie mistake) Tastes like a dream now.

I own an ijust2 and as has been stated you have to prime those coils thoroughly. Fully charged the battery puts out around 80 watts. You don't want 80 watts of burnt coil. Yuck, been there done that. Sounds like your getting it sorted out. Right now I have my subtank mini attached to the ijust2 battery. Doesn't look that bad.
