Hello. I'm a pack and a half a day smoker who has just decided to purchase my first vapor setup. I am hoping that this will help me quit for good. I have tried patches and other e-cigarettes (something like Blu) but I didn't like them. The setup I bought was one that takes liquid flavor and I noticed that it really isn't exactly like what I am used to, so I am hoping to learn from other users as well.

You're never going to find what you're used to when switching from smoking to vaping, but in my case, and in many many other cases, I've found something I love more! There's a lot of trial and error in this. I've been vaping for a month and I'm still definitely in the trial-and-error phase.

I was a 1 pack+/day smoker, and I found it very helpful to keep a strong tobacco flavor on hand. It's never going to taste/feel like a cigarette, but it does keep my cigarette cravings down to a level that I can mostly ignore them. So I always keep a tank full of tobacco flavor (Turkish right now, but I'm considering "Red Box Full Flavor" from Alien Vapors and maybe an "RY-4" flavor).

It would help the members to help you, though, if you asked some specific questions so we could answer them, or point you in the right direction. And when you get your PV, don't be afraid to vape away! I know I wanted to smoke the whole first few days, but I just kept vaping until I started to feel a little sick from the nicotine, and I made it through.

One thing I have noticed today is it seems to burn in my throat just a bit after I take a drag from it. It might be the juice. I smoke Marlboro Menthol Ultra Lights and I tried a few at the store and the flavor that was the closest was Icey Mint.

I do notice a distinct difference in the "feel" of the vapor compared to a cigarette. But I guess it's something I need to get used to.

Every device and every liquid has a different throat hit. What exactly did you purchase this time around? Perhaps we can make some suggestions?

The setup is from Evod. I have a Evod Black and Evod Chrome tank, and the battery is an Evod 1100. The nicotine dosage is at 24, according to the salesperson. I notice if I take a "quicker" drag from it, it doesn't seems to burn as much, but I do not get as much vapor to exhale either. I have been taking a 3 to 4 second slow drag.

Also, how many puffs from the tank would equal a normal cigarette?

My first hit gagged me badly. There's a learning curve to vaping, it's not like smoking a cig. Just my experience. Welcome :)

That is a good starter setup.
If you are getting a burnt taste that is not good. It means the liquid isn't feeding correctly for your setup. This is normal and the coil unit is made to be adjusted. I find taking one of the two extra wicks out is perfect for me. You might want to try this with a new unused unit first so you can see what you are doing.
You need to take the coil out of the base.
Take off the rubber top.
the stem and the base are two units and can come apart if you try to bend it up and dwon (left righ, back fourth). The stem will pop out.
Inside there are two little braided tufts of wick. and then the main wick with the coil wrapped around it.
You can take a pair of tweezers and pull one of the loose wicks out, set it aside for future use and pop the coil unit all back together.

once the coil unit has started to go bad you can pull it back apart, take the burnt up loose wick you left in there out and put the one you took out back in and get another week out of the coil.

There are youtube video's about this if you'd like a visual. I think P. Busardo did it with the Pro-tank coil but they are almost identical (evod coil has a slightly shorter stem).

The coils are made like this because every liquid feeds differently based on how much of what type of base is used and even ambient temperatures will make a difference.

Edit: "Also, how many puffs from the tank would equal a normal cigarette?"
There is almost no way to accurately gauge that due to a lot of factors including a lack of real trustworthy statistical data and variances in personal usage and habits. Just use it as needed and remember your unit has an automatic shut-off for a reason. ;-)

Could be the ratio of the PG/VG. Higher PG gives a harder throat hit also, may be a factor. If it's irritating to you, try going higher on the VG. With that said, I gagged my first few days of vaping, but you get the hang of it, and it's smooth sailing. Now I can take as large or small of a hit as I like.

It's not like smoking. So as soon as you quit looking for something to taste close to that, you'll be doing well. But if you keep going, you will end up liking it better than smoking. No smell, no yellow windows and walls, and when you hit the flavors you like, you will wonder why you ever liked smoking in the first place.

Congrats and good luck!

I went back to the store this evening and they lowered my nicotine level and that seems to have helped. Also, I got a flavor called Cotton Candy...wow what's a difference.

Yeah, I was about to say. High nic levels (which for me starts about 24) can give me a "tingle" kind of thing though mostly in my nasal passages. Which I kind of liked a bit but it turned mean fast. :)

Also, I found that too high a nic level can knock your taste buds for a loop and cause "vaper's tongue" where you can't taste your vape at all (though, weirdly, most folks, myself included, report they can still taste food).

Nobody can really tell you how much is "best". You have to experiment and find your level. I ran into another vaper here on ECF who described a smoking habit very much like mine but went in a completely different direction as a vaper. I went lower on the nic level, he went higher. I have no clue what that's about. You'd think since we had similar smoking habits, we would have similar vaping habits. But we don't.

Go figure?

But, so...

Also, how many puffs from the tank would equal a normal cigarette?

Nobody knows.

This whole "vaping" thing really is new. I read that the first patent for a viable device was taken out only about 2003. Which would mean the entire history of vaping is ten years long and that's all. Still a lot about it that hasn't been "nailed down". Basically, it comes down to, "whatever works for you".

Like finding a nicotine level that keeps you from having "nicotine fits" but doesn't scorch your tongue or something crazy. Finding the flavors you really like (and that's seriously subjective stuff that). And the whole thing about the two main base liquids: PG and VG. You can get 100% of one or the other. Or a blend of the two. And a lot of that also comes down to personal taste.

Generally, folks say PG carries flavors better (for me, too much so it seems, 80/20 mixes taste bad to me) and gives better "throat hit". VG is known for producing more vapor. What mix or mixes you'll prefer, nobody can tell you. It's also very subjective and a matter of taste. I lean more toward VG myself. Though most times vape 50/50 (half PG, half VG). My guess is it has to do with even as a smoker, I preferred "smooth" over "throat hit". Like if I bummed a Marlboro Red from somebody, they could irritate my throat. Even make me cough. And since I liked the whole "act" of smoking, the vapor is important to me.

(Funny thing, I exhale more vapor as a vaper than I did smoke as a smoker. I like making big, billowy clouds of vapor. Dunno why, just do. :) But I never exhaled so much smoke. Come to think, I did such a deep inhale as a smoker like trying to grab every bit of nicotine or something, I barely exhaled any smoke at all... oof... don't wanna think what my lungs look like now.)

I think, my opinion (but a strong one), is you shouldn't worry about "equivalences" or "puffs" or "how much is too much" or anything like that. Explore the liquids and all and find what you enjoy. I think that's important. Seems to me, the more people enjoy their vape, the less they care about smoking.

Part of the fun is that there is so much variety out there. The variations in liquids is mind boggling. The little vape shop I go to sometimes around here has a "menu" with over 200 (!) different flavors. And that's just one shop. Cigarettes were... regular and menthol. And that was about that.

Seems so boring now. :)

I noticed that when I first started vaping, the higher the nic the worse the burn/peppery taste. I lowered my nic concentration and the peppery burn went almost away. I also noticed if Im a bit dehydrated the burn was a bit worse.

You MAY be getting confused about throat hit (TH) versus a dry or burnt hit. With higher nic level juice you may experience a bigger throat hit or a slight burning SENSATION in the back of your throat. This is desirable to many as it more replicates the sensation of smoking. However if it is a burnt TASTE (notice differentiation between sensation and taste) then your wicks aren't doing their job quickly enough.
