I am new to vaping and wondering what most people suggest as starting levels, as I have found that PG /VG levels vary so much between companys 90/10 --75/25 -- 73/27 -- 50/50, and so on ...I do understand what PG/VG is and what the effects are.
Depends if you're sensitive to PG (Which I am a little) I find the mixes that have 50% VG or more are the best for that nice cloud of vapor. When the VG is like 30% for me...I get a burning throat hit @24mg nic that I don't enjoy as much but I can vape it. 100% PG and I can't stand it personally, it just turns into a burning harsh mess with very little vapor. That's my opinion though of course.
I need 24mg to stay off the analogs, any lower and I can't stop the cravings.
I would say you're pretty safe going with 50\50...this ratio wicks well enough in cartomizers and you will like the vapor production you get from it. It's pretty solid to start at 50\50.
Many people are starting to go 100% VG, but there is one negative to it. It's thick and doesn't always wick well in a cartomizer, but it's really awesome in vapor production and smooth throat hit at high MG nic.
I say it's a good idea to start with 80/20 pg to vg, see how you like this and then move from their with two basic understandings which are #1 PG = thinner base, thinner vapor, more TH and flavor , #2 VG thicker base, thicker vaper, less TH and flavor.
Be mindful of changes, if any in how you feel, ex: headache, dizziness, heavy chest feeling ... some people may be allergic or sensitive to PG , and some people have complained of a heavy feeling in the chest/lungs with VG.
I always have a bottle of PG and VG around so I can add if I want to alter the mixture a bit. I am mostly using 100% vg jokesmoke from Jughead right now.

Most of my juice is 70/30. I find at about 10mg nic it's really nice and carries the flavour well. That said, I also have some juice at 50/50 which is awsome. Like Nikkita said, start at about 80/20 or 70/30 and move from there and find what works best for you and wat you like.

PG - propylene glycol - is a flavor carrier and a common food additive, medicine base and the ingredient used in fog machines and air conditioning or surgical filtration systems.
PG holds flavor very well and gives "throat hit" (the somewhat harsher kick in the back of the throat that many former smokers like to hold on to).
VG - vegetable glycerin - is a viscous liquid also very common in food, medicines, mouthwash, toothpaste and more. It is very smooth on the throat and is used as a gargle for mouth problems and sore throat.
VG adds sweetness to eliquid and smoothness and creates thicker vapor.
Some people develop sensitivities to either PG or VG. Others require an adjustment period of a couple weeks.
Both VG and PG use will dehydrate you a bit more than usual. So do remember to increase your water intake when vaping.
I'd suggest you try 70PG/30VG to begin. It's a nice mix and good for cartomizers and atomizers alike. I started with 100% PG and honestly, I don't notice a lot of difference in the throat hit and such but I will say that 100%VG produces quite a bit of vapor.
Okay since we're all confusing the poor guy I'll throw in my 2 cents.
I like 100% VG even in tanks. Jug has suggested that if it's not wicking to put the bottle in some warm water for a bit. That should reduce the viscosity even after it has cooled down. But I've never found Jugs liquids to need it. Other liquids I try to get them to at least 70% VG.
I've found with 100% PG it makes my hands smell. Something about PG that seeps out my pours. I also get a bad taste in my mouth from it. I'm not sure if this is a bad reaction to it or what.

the hardest thing to Vaping for me was finding what e liquid works best for me. I have several friends in town here. we all quit smoking by Vaping. we seemed to have settled into 3 groups. I lean heavily to the PG side of things and really dislike VG in general. anything with more than 50% VG makes me gag. but i've not tried 100% PG yet I'm sitting around 80/20. then there's the 50/50 crowd. then there's my buddy Dave who is a VG super dude. we can all agree on hardware but when it comes to juice. it's a very personal thing. the juice Dave swears by tastes like Bear dung to me lol and vice versa (plus he likes very sweet tasting juices i do not)
Agree with everything here. personally I like juices with more PG, for the reason of throat hit and flavour. VG tend to goop up a bit, but kanadiankat's tip of putting the bottle in a bowl of hot water has thinned it out a bit, which is nice.
