A lot of people go with eGo-style batteries when they are starting out, coupled with a simple clearomizer, which is as close to plug-and-play as e-cigs get. Variable voltage batteries like the eGo Twist or Vision Spinner are pretty good. Or you could skip the beginner stuff and go right to an APV.
I agree with glen: a cheap rechargeable VV battery/batteries is the way to go. Even if you buy some fancy mod really quickly afterwards, those batteries are going to be invaluable backups.
