Hi there,

I already have seeked advice on this forum once, and would like to do again since I got helpful replies from very nice people :)

I was advised to try sub-ohm vaping, so I bought a Kangertech Top Box Mini Starter Kit and it is currently shipping. Since I am new to vaping, I researched about sub-ohm vaping and got a little scared. I've read several threads and articles about the risks of sub-ohm vaping and couldn't find myself being calmed, so I wanted to ask the questions that bother me the most here:

1. Since the Kangertech doesn't come with a battery, I've gone with a "Samsung INR 18650 30Q 3000 mAh Flat Top (unprotected)". I've read a few things about it, but do I really need a multimeter and a silicone storage box for the battery? I'm not questioning that these are useful, but would you recommend these to a beginner that just wants to try vaping?
2. About battery safety. This is fairly new to me, coming from batteries with all sorts of security mechanisms built-in, but should I, as a newb, get a seperate charging station for my battery? When I charge through the Top Box, are there any security mechanisms e.g. for overcharging?
3. I won't stop informing myself about sub-ohm and battery safety, but can you give me some quick tips on that? Just so I can check my knowledge about these things.

Thanks in advance,

Filip

Hi man,

1. Your battery is good. A multimeter and a silicon storage box is really not necessary, depends if you want to carry it around.

2. I would get a separate charger for it because in the end the batteries will last longer and you're
going to be safe if there's a defect with the internal charger of the mod. Saving yourself, your batteries and your mod.

3. There is a guru here named Mooch, I suggest you go read his blog entries Mooch

Mooch gave the Samsung 30Q good grades up to the 50W range on a 0.26Ω coil - I think you're good there on what you're going to be able to do on a Top Box.
Safety issues with sub-ohming are very minimal using a regulated mod like the Top Box and frankly, I would not be concerned as long as you learn about using good batteries with sufficient CDR amperage for your setup.
A separate charger is recommended and optimal for charging 18650's; use the built-in charging when you have no other options. The built-in charging circuit is "okay" for emergency use.

LG HG2's are my current favorite (3000 mah 20 Amp), and Samsung 25r's (2500 mah 20 Amp) are excellent as well. You can get a Nitecore I2 for under $15. I would highly recommend a separate charger as most battery failures occur during recharge, protectthe mod and you aren't tethered to a cable during recharge, just swap out batteries and go. If you're carrying extra batteries on your person a silicone sleeve or battery case is recommended. I read where a battery discharged in a persons pocket from keys and change making a circuit, be safe.

That battery is a good choice for that machine. I recommend a stand alone charger, but I can not say it is required. I keep my batteries in storage boxes, and recommend that, too. It's a cheap way to add a little safety. One thing: never carry a loose battery in your pocket where it might short across keys or coins. For that purpose, I will say a battery sock or battery condom is a requirement. Here's a photo:

1. Your battery is good as long as you don't go really low with subohm builds. Stay above about .3ohms and you'll be fine. It's a good battery for .5ohm vaping. If you're wanting to go lower I suggest getting the LG HG2 batteries. Higher amp rating and the same mAh rating.

1a. You don't need a multimeter, but I would HIGHLY recommend getting a carrying case for your batteries to use when you carry a spare. Liquids can damage the battery and having things like loose change or keys in the same pocket as an unprotected battery can create an unintentional circuit and short out the battery in your pocket. That's VERY dangerous as the battery can catch fire or even explode in your pocket. A cheap battery case protects the battery against both shorts and damage.

2. External charges aren't required, but are VERY handy. It's always easier to have to have a fully charged spare to carry around than it is to find someplace to charge through your mod when you're not at home. Let's say you want to go out to the beach for a day, where are you going to charge your mod? It's easier to have 2-3 batteries and an external charger and then just swap out the batteries in your mod if you need to.

3. The most important thing to know is the Continuous Drain amp rating of your battery, and the amp draw of your subohm build. Never exceed the safe limits of the battery. And research the battery amp rating very well, as some companies list the "Pulse" rating rather than the Continuous Drain rating. If you see an amp rating higher than 20A it's listing the Pulse rating.

And to make things a little easier for you here, we have a resident battery tester here. Here's the list of all of the batteries he's tested. He usually gives you the most important information right in the thread title for each battery test.

Don't get a multimeter. Cheap multimeter are not worth crap in sub-ohm/single ohm range, they haven't been design to read that low. Unless your willing to spend quite a bit more money on a quality multimeter it's going to be useless. If you start building coil you may want an ohm meter specialty build for vaping, they are relatively cheap and at least they have been design to read sub-ohm resistance.

Get some protective storage for your battery you don't want to short them up in your pocket with your keys or any other metal object. And you don't want to scratch the wrap.

I'm another fan of Samsung25r and LG HG2 batteries.
