Hey all,

Just got my first e-cig (Joy 510) going today, and I still have a few questions that I couldn't quite find any answers for in the various FAQs and such around here:

1) I have 5 empty, or 'blank', cartridges that came with my e-cig. I now have the e-juice. Should I only fill up a cartridge if I'm about to use it? Or can I fill one up, put the cap on it and have it ready to go later in the day, or even the next day?

2) You guys have done a good job of making me paranoid about a dry atomizer... However, I've gotten two nasty mouthfuls of e-juice already! I fill the cart up until it starts to pool, then I absorb the top into a piece of paper towel... I put two drops on the atomizer, and that first hit usually gurgles and squirts juice in my mouth! Help?

3) Finally, if I can fill up multiple cartridges, would it be possible to not have to 'top up' and just switch out the cart for a full one? Then I can just top them all up at the end of the night, say?

This seems to be my toughest hurdle getting off the analogs... I'm just not sure when, or how much I should be vaping! I don't know when to top-up, or when to just leave it alone, I don't know when the atomizer is about to fry itself, etc... I'm quite nervous and anxious! Any advice to help me get over this??

Thanks a bunch!

You could potentially do that, it would be a major pain though because you'll probably want to top off or switch cartridges about every 1/2 hour because they don't wick up well. So even though it's still 1/2 full of liquid it won't soak up into the atomizer! Yeah, it's frustrating... drip tip or cartomizers are better imo, but if you must use the cartridges then I recommend finding an alternate filler to replace the white fuzz they come with. I like the blue foam: YouTube - ‪Marineland Filter Cart MOD‬‏

One of two things is going on; it sounds like you are filling the carts properly (they look like a slushy on top when you do it right) so it's likely that you are trying to suck on it like a cigarette. It's not a cigarette. You need to take nice slooowww, eeeaaasy draws on it. Don't suck on it all hard and angry like you did when you smoked.

See answer #1. It's possible, but a humongous PITA.

Good luck!!

Hey all,

Sure, just fill up several at a time. That's what those caps are there for - to keep them moist and to prevent a leaky mess when traveling. If it's not convenient for you during the day to top off cartridges it's better to just carry several prepared one's with you.

Too much liquid - the question is: Where?

When you are filling and you reach the point that you think you have too much liquid in there try poking the poly fill around a bit with a paper clip to see if it will absorb any more liquid. Wasting your liquids by wicking the cart off with a paper towel should not be necessary.

But I'm betting the source of the problem is priming your attys too much. If you get too much liquid in the atty you can end up with two problems: Sucking out the excess liquid as you describe. And the possibility of a burnt taste as that excess liquid at the base of the atty coil burns off as you vape. Blow your attys out. Did you get a pile of liquid on the paper towel? Try the atty now but don't prime it again. It's primed enough already and probably won't need more priming unless you rinse the atty out and clean it.

3) Finally, if I can fill up multiple cartridges, would it be possible to not have to 'top up' and just switch out the cart for a full one? Then I can just top them all up at the end of the night, say?

Sure. You will have to get a feel for how much you vape and how long a cartridge will last you before you need to switch to a new one. Best to still bring your liquids along in case you need to top off early.

For the used carts: If you have any possibility of storing the used ones with the cap down, the remaining liquid will continue to migrate toward the atty end - where it counts. You may be able to try them again later in the day and get more run time out of them.

Keep in mind that the poly fill used in the carts isn't the greatest material in the world. There are better materials that can hold a bit more liquid and seem to do a better job of releasing it as you vape. It's nearly impossible to vape the original poly fill that's in the carts dry. Google the site for "blue foam mod" if you want to check it out.

You will figure it out. It's technology - it's all new to you!

How much to vape? I wish that was an easy one but we all have to go down that learning path. I had to work at it. And in hindsight I know I wasn't vaping enough in those first couple weeks.

Don't worry about the atty so much. Whenever something starts tasting harsh and feeling dry you have run out of liquids in the cart. Time to top off or switch to another cart. If anything, leave the newly installed cart sit for a minute even before you fire up to allow the atty so soak up some liquid. It's a balance, but too much liquid in the atty doesn't work any better than too little.

Good luck. It won't take long to figure things out.

Hey thanks for the quick and helpful responses!

Does anyone have any experience with shaking the cartridges :) ? I've been trying that, but I'm not sure if it's doing anything. I guess I just need more experience than one night with this thing...

I've been looking in to replacing the filler material, and will probably do that in the near future. I suppose I could sum up what I'd like to know now with one question: How do I know if the atomizer is burning dry? I've heard it described as 'burnt' tasting, but I'm a little worried I might confuse that with the tobacco flavoured juice I have. Does it make a sound? Ok, and last question: Is some amount of sizzling sounds acceptable while it's vaping?

Cheers

When you hear gurgling, it usually means you've flooded the atomizer, possibly from over filling but it sounds like you are doing it right. Anyway, take the cartridge off and take the atomizer off the battery then blow on the mouthpiece end of the atomizer into a paper towel until no juice comes out, reassemble and you should be good to go. I have to agree with the others. Carts suck. Filler material cartomizers aren't much better. They hold more juice but you sacrifice flavor. CE2s or tanks are the way to go. You can carry a couple of those with different flavors when you are on the go.

I've never heard anybody say anything about shaking a cartridge. Since there's absorbent material in them there's nothing to shake. The juice should all be absorbed into the filler material.

There's a distinct difference between burnt atty flavor and any tobacco juice you might be using. That burnt taste is really nasty. If you hear a pop when you're tasting burnt then you may have popped/fried the atty. Just keep the atty wet but not flooded. It's trial & error. You'll get the hang of it. Don't let it stress you out.

Sizzling is a good thing. It means the atomizer is working properly. You don't want to hear gurgling though.
