Hello everyone, I just bought my first vaping equipment yesterday and thought I'd join your forum.

I was a pack and a half - two pack a day Marlboro menthol smoker and guys from work finally talked me into vaping. I purchased a 30w Istick with an Aspire Nautilus to get started. I got a couple different flavors from the vape shop all with 18mg of nicotine and I've noticed so far they are kinda harsh. Some hits are great but some can be a bit uncomfortable. I've also noticed my throat has been real dry and froggy, even more so than when I smoke a ton of ciggs. I'm hoping this will eventually go away. I'm hoping that I quit smoking and save my lungs as well as bank account from vaping but after reading a lot on here it sounds like you guys go all out with the equipment and mods. Haha, hopefully I can be ok with just normal stuff.

Anyway, I look forward to conversing with the members and learning a lot about vaping through this forum.

Welcome to the ECF Fam fletcher6490! Make yourself right at home here. There are plenty of vapers on here that just use simple set ups like yours!
Your iStick and Nautilus combo is a great starter set and much better than what I used for my first kit (disposable clearo and ego mini). Most of us who have started using more advanced mods just like having a new hobby or like spending too much money.. Or are in search of a stronger vape. It is all user preference, what wattage are you running your tank at? I find 18mg to be very harsh since I started with 12mg, then to 6mg and now 3mg. Sometime if I can't get 3mg I use 6 anyways so its not much of a problem.

Its all up to you in what you want to do with your vape, I know i told myself I was not going to be needing anything more and next thing I knew I had a slew of RDA/RTA's all over my desk along with wire and cotton. Told myself I was not going to make my own liquid but I am 1 paycheck away from pulling the trigger on a kit to start.. Never ending for some of us lol

Happy vaping Brotha

Welcome aboard
Suggestions:
Drink lots of water
Long slow draws
Draw into the mouth then lung
The istick doesn't do the best job of regulating power
Take a dry puff (don't hit the fire button) when an off tasting draw occurs. If this fixes the issue a little decrease in air flow may fix it.
Avoid 'chain vaping' - repeated fast puffs

thanks for the welcoming post's. I've been keeping the wattage somewhere between 6 and 7, any higher seems to be real harsh. I ordered some new juices and got the 12mg nicotine so maybe that will be better. Other than the occasional harsh hit, I am enjoying vaping and it is definitely stopping my cravings for a ciggarette. I smoked ciggarettes with a french inhale technique and that seems to work best for me with the vaping as well.

Great starter setup! I started with blu, then egos, than a SmokTech SiD and finally a Hana clone.
Blu was a pita, egos worked, SiD was better, but Hana clone was where it was at for me... Good size and shape with plenty of power.
Long story short if I started where you did I probably would have saved a few hundred dollars...
Standard new vapor tips:
Drink lots of water
If you are getting regular burnt hits try either lowering your power or cutting down the airflow. Cutting the airflow will allow the negative pressure based juice feed to pull more liquid into the coil head. If your burnt hits are occasional they can be resolved with primer puffs - a few hard pulls without firing the device. Also a good way to prime new coil heads.

One of the reasons I decided to quit smoking and start vaping was to hopefully eliminate the constant clearing of the throat, which I think I did quite often. I remember quiting smoking cold turkey for a few months a few years ago and that side effect went away. Will this also go away if you vape? So far it seems like vaping really dries your throat out so I figured I would ask.

Thanks, scrubzz! I tend to research too much and will probably spend the next month of my life on this site learning everything I can. I just realized, I have the 20w Istick and not the 30w. Does it make that much of a difference? I'm guessing the higher the wattage the more vapor output, right? Is it a good idea to put my 20w to full power?

20w should be fine unless you want to go dual coil RDA, even then you may beable to getaway with twenty watts.

Gurgling means you have a flooded coil, that can happen if you over prime, or if your airflow is too tight. You can vape through it or you can do this with a tank:
With the tank assembled, flip it up so the part that connects to the battery is above your head pointed at the sky, put our mouth on the drip tip, hold a paper towel gently over the airflow and give it a few strong blows. You don't want to block the airflow completely, just to catch the juice that comes flying out. Flipping the tank upside down (assuming its a bottom coil tank) keeps the juice from feeding more into the coil, which would just waste juice.
