Hello all, I'm an absolute newbie to vaping and could use some advice! First off, I'm currently smoking a pack a day of marlboro menthol lights and can't quit cold turkey after several tries so I'm gonna turn to vaping. Over the weekend I tried out my friend's modern vapor 902, chocolate flavored and absolutely loved it! So I've got my eye on the 902 starter kit. I was thinking about purchasing some cartomizers and bottles of juice in various flavors to make the hobby even cheaper. Any suggestions on good sites to buy juice from? And do you suggest I stick to the prefilled carts since I'm brand new to vaping? Thanks guys!

The 902 looks quite expensive for those small little batteries, IMO. Plus it only comes with one battery and atomizer for $55!!! One, maybe 2 hours at the most on a charge for that size. If I was a beginner, I would rather have batteries that would at least give me 5 hours on a charge and provides a better throat hit. I would suggest you also look at the Riva or E-Power. They are the size of a slim cigar and get much better battery life and will provide warmer vapor in comparison. Plus you get a better model with two batteries for less than the 902. Here are a couple of reputable sites to look at:

Liberty Flights:

Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - E-Power

Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510

MadVapes:

e-Power

Hi Tyler, and welcome to ECF.

I'm a relative newbie as well, but thought I'd offer my advice. I went with the Riva 510 kit from Liberty Flights. They seem to be very popular here. Long battery life (I was a lighter smoker than you, but I've yet to have a battery run out) and compatible with 510 items. Liberty Flights is well thought of here and my experiences were great - not my favorite juices so far, however. The Riva is about the size of a pen - it won't look like a cigarette but I found that was less important to me than I was expecting.

As for cartomizers, I'd recommend the Boge - with the Riva you can use the Low Resistance 2.0 ohm model, or you can get the 3.0s. They are easy to fill and hold a decent amount of juice. I've also had good luck with some dual coil cartomizers. You can get the Boges at Liberty Flights.

As for juices, I'd just get a bunch of sample sizes to start. It's fun to mess around. I ordered a bunch of tobacco-ey flavors when I first started, and pretty quickly found that they didn't appeal to me as much as some of the other flavors. There are tons of juice places - I can personally vouch for great experiences with Vermillion River, TastyVapor, and Good Prophets. Not to say I liked every single juice, but their delivery speed, packaging, and product quality are all good. They are also well thought of here. Good Prophet also has a really good price on the Boge cartomizers.

Just my .02.

remember to press the 20% off at Liberty-Flights.com before shopping

Only buy the Riva 410 kit at Liberty-Flights.com since they have the latest 3.7v models of the one manufacturer who makes those.

Order a 510 drip tip (I recommend delrin or plastic so it can also be used as a cartomizer mouthpiece if you want)

And a spare charger cable (could also be used at work in case you ever need it)

And Boge cartomizers - one pack of 3ohm (at least to learn on and I use them all the time) and one pack of the hotter 2ohm ones (more popular but do use battery charge faster). Only put juices you have tested and liked in cartomizers. There are more exotic cartos but Boge are the most popular cartos. If LF is out of them then try LiteCigUSA.net or NiteLiteVapor.us and for buying 15 at a time see Crystal Clear Vapor.

Eliquid - not the best but you need some to start - I recommend you aim at one strength and buy a small amount higher and lower. The cartomize rs like thin juices so get PG for the 90PG/10Vg juices US for them (I use up to 20% VG juices in Boge cartos and have get 10-14+ days use out of each). On the atomizers you can use any PG/VG as long as it flows at least as fast as you vape.

Well, the kit is a really good start - I went with the Riva Lite kit. It also come with 5 cartridges and two atomizers, which are helpful for tasting juices. I quickly moved from atomizer and cartridges to cartomizers though, like I said. I'd pick up at least 10 Boges - maybe 5 Low Resistance (LR) and 5 3.0s. Taste and vapor will be slightly different at those ohms - another expert can probably fill you in slightly better. I've been vaping for a couple weeks, and have only had to throw out one Boge carto.

I'd just buy some sample juices. Tasty Vapor has a buy two, get one free going on right now and I think it includes sample sizes. They are $6.75 normally but are larger than the other sample sizes I received. If you do, try Geoff's Blend - or head on over to their supplier forum and look for suggestions. I went a little crazy with juices and have probably 30 little bottles. Some I may never try again, but no biggie.

EDIT: I second the drip tips mentioned by Dormouse. I have about 4.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, that riva 510 looks like a solid and very affordable unit. What do you suggest I order along with it?
Personally I found the standard attys that come with it to give a weak throat hit, I would get some low resistance atomizers I have found 2 ohm ones good, and get a drip tip as the standard cartridge feed system is ok for the first few puffs but tails off real fast, you might also want to get some lr cartomizers for when it's inconvenient to drip, and don't forget the e juice!, I hope you enjoy vaping as much as I do

I loved Tasty Vapor but the flavors I got (Vanilla and Butter Cream) dropped too much flavoring sediment and clogged cartos. So just watch out for that. It's not a huge problem but cartos last longer if not clogged with sediment.

WOWbacco (cocoa tobacco) and WOW Vanilla (sweet and cotton-candy-like) from Vapor4Life are two thin no/low sediment juices I use (note - their cartos are not 510 but with a 510 to 808 or 510 to 901 adapter from GoodProphets you can use those to try flavors on the Riva - they have some sample packs of cartos). At least sign up at Vapor4Life to get sale notices.

FreedomSmokeUSA Pomegranate in 80PG/20VG is a nice fruit flavor. And they have the most tobaccos of anywhere. Some of their juices are Specialties and the Specialties and samples are only available in 50/50 (thicker than I will use in normal stuffing cartos) but you can drip the thick ones on the atomizer. I use two that way - their Voodoo tobacco (has something fruity and something bit spicy in it - nice subtle aroma) and their Hopscotch (like honey and butterscotch to me).

Sign up at Gourmet Vapor to get the infrequent but huge sale notices. A bit of a crapshoot there since mny flavors are customer creations but definitely worth trying during sales.

Only buy the Riva??? Why is that??? The E-Power is also 3.7 volt and has batteries that cost $4-$5 instead of the $14 - $20 for the Riva and the batteries last 3-4 time longer than the Riva. Nothing wrong with the Riva but much wrong with your limited advice.

If you 'absolutely love' the flavor you vaped this weekend it's worth the additional cost. Or you could spend $ thousands chasing flavors to find one like the one you loved but didn't buy because it was expensive. You're ahead of 90% of vapers if you've found the flavor you love. Congrats to you :)

Awesome man - you will love the equipment and LF is a great vendor! Again I was kind of hit or miss with the juices from LF, but I guess that's true of juices in general. I'd highly recommend placing a couple more orders with others juice vendors - my recs are already in this thread but you will find a ton on this board. Also, while I recommended the Boges, I would also suggest sampling juices using the cartridges that come in that pack. The reason for this is that cartomizers hold more juice, and you kind of have to smoke through it once you fill it - I know some people have methods for cleaning out cartos but it might be a waster of time and juice, so give it a sample first.

Thanks for the heads up on that one, will consider one of those when my riva batteries start to fade

If you take to vaping, which it sounds like you will, when it's time to move up or get another PV (all of us have back-ups - usually one of the first ones we bought), I would suggest you look at a good 5 volt or variable volt model. They provide warmer vapor than the Riva, have long lasting batteries and are more consistent. For example (and I'm a heavy vaper), I get 21 hours on a charge with my variable volt Darwin.

Just something to keep in mind as you move forward.

Had a look at the Darwin and very interested, found one for £179 so not a cheap option for vv vaping but as far as I can tell it's the best option with people preferring it to the provari
