Just bought a reo woodvil off of ecf classifieds. Was working great then noticed a spark at the top of the battery, the spring got bright red then the battery got loose and fell out. I can get the battery back in by stretching the spring back out. But everytime I retire the spring gets red and shrinks. I checked my battery and its at 4.17 volts attys at 1.6 ohms. Is this just a simple fix with noalox? Or is it something else? Any help appreciated

Thanks Will

Hi Will,

It sounds like you've got a short that collapsed the spring. I'd suggest that you not continue trying to use your REO. Your best bet would be to PM Rob (redeyedancer), the creator and maker of REOs and ask for his advice.

It could be short in the switch or something wrong with the battery. Rob is an excellent guy. He will get this sorted out in short order. Not many vendors are as stand-up as he is, IMO. The spring collapsing like it did is a safety feature. Good thing it acted as it's supposed to, instead of your Woodvil heating up and possibly catching fire.

Actually, now that the spring has collapsed, if you continue to use it, it won't collapse a second time if you get another short. I advise you to get a hold of Rob. Even if you don't send your mod in for repair, you can get a spring from him and do it yourself. Please be warned that the spring on the Woodvil is soldered in place as opposed to the Grand or Mini where you just need to remove a screw to replace it. If you're good at soldering, you'll be fine. :)
