Hi All,

Been reading the forum for a wee bit and I've decided to, since I have made the conscious choice to stop smoking by vaping, say hello :). Liking this forum and so far I've gathered loads of information so Thank You to all.

Here's my story:

I'm James. A 42 year old male from Scotland. I've been smoking since the age of...you know I can't actually remember. I remember playing 'butty' when I was 9 but don't think I actually started (as in having a packet with me at all times) till I was 12. So 30 years. The last 17 years I have been smoking roll ups. In my head it was because I was aware of all the other 'things' the manufacturer's put in normal cigarettes so thought I was making a 'better' choice.

I have never tried to stop smoking but I have went through two periods of buying vapes but didn't research enough and gave up before I even started. The first time I thought it was because of the cheap(ish) vape I bought so went in the bin. Second time I bought a slightly better on but gave up before I started thinking it was because of the nicotine liquid content I was recommended. I was using it constantly which made me feel unwell - probably nicotine overdose - but the simple truth is that I had no intention of giving up.

I am now glad of those two periods and since then I have realised it is about the process for me. So what I have done this time is buy a better mod - Cool Fire 4 with Kanger Protank 4 - with a lower nicotine juice (6mg) that I can use all day. I found I was using all day when I was 'dabbling' the second time. I have also got another 'cheaper' Blu e-cig which I have put a higher 12mg in for those moments when (if) I have a nicotine craving.

The reason I want to stop smoking is that recently I have started running (6 months) but for the life of me I cannot get faster. In fact, I took part in a Duathlon at the weekend and I came last in the run. Turns out I didn't but I came 41st out of 62 but the ones behind me were walking. This has been enough for me to say 'No way am I coming last again!' so my journey started yesterday at 6.46pm which was the last time I rolled. 24 hours have passed and I am now on my second day :D. For me that's a big deal. I haven't chosen to have a single day without smoking prior to yesterday.

That's my story. Thought I'd say hello and log my route here :)

Out of curiosity any runners here at all? I'm curious about lung capacity and resistance. I'm aware that there's been 'reports' (that's in apostrophes because I understand how the capitalistic world works - money before people and I take any report where companies are losing money with a pinch of salt) where there is a lung resistance after vaping but can't seem to find anything regarding 30/60/120 mins after. So if there are people who were runners before they stopped smoking and are still runners after stopping smoking whilst vaping then I'd like to hear from you and how you've improved.

I've started this journey with a single step over the last 24 hours and now I'm on the way to my destination :)

So, Hi again.

James

Hi Axiom. Thank you and, hey, you'd be surprised.

Just realised I didn't put the quantity in my post but I smoked 20+ a day. Started off by using the Couch to 5k app. Walking a minute, running a minute for 20 mins with a 5 minute walk warm up and a 5 minute walk cool down and it slowly increases to running the full 30 mins.

I was literally gasping for breath the first day so I slowed down but carried on and it became 'easier' and 'easier' but now, even today, ran 10 miles. Although the tortoise would certainly have passed me :)

Hi James and welcome! My great-grandfather came from Scotland.
I think there were some threads on runners. Just put the search term in and see if you get some hits. Like Axiom_1, no way am I going there. Anyway, glad you're making the transition and running, even though it's not for me. Good group of people here too so a nice forum to be on. All the best

Hi and welcome. Congrats on just finishing a Duathlon regardless how long it took. Yes, your functional lung capacity will increase with time away from cigarettes. There are, to my knowledge, no large, well structured trials to determine short term effects of vaping on lung function. Part of the problem there is vaping can cover so many variables, from the type of liquid to the delivery system and the method of vaping.

After you have been off of cigarettes for a while you should have an idea of lung "stamina" compared to the past. As to whether or not vaping will affect your exercise tolerance if done right before, or close to the time of exercise, is something you'll find out for yourself. It certainly can't be worse than heading out for a run right after a smoke. Good luck!

Welcome James.
I can't help with the running question but light exercise (gentle cycling for example) is much easier for me after years "on the vapes", as some folk call it.
Coolfire and Protanks 4 is great.
Blu is a swear word for many of us; a tobacco company supporting the TPD is unconscionably evil. If you want a mini kit with higher nicotine you can replicate that from any of the vaping brands, but I won't lecture you further.
Good luck with it all. :)

Hi djsvapour, did some research since you posted that. Had no idea it was scooped up by a tobacco giant. Thanks for the heads up. I live in a kinda remote place so it was something I picked up from the local shop. Next time I'm in the city I'll certainly grab something else. Thanks again

EDIT: Apologies for the double post.

Thank you, spread the word, join the brotherhood.

Blu, E-Lites, Vivid... all total no-no's in the People's front of Vape-dea. (Price is a major factor as well).

E-Lites and Vivid aren't supporting the TPD. There is one vaping company that is, however, and if there was any justice in this mad world of tobacco & governments vs. the Vapers they would be ridiculed on social media and sent packing as well. They are called Vapouriz. They think they are Totally Wicked...
Another bunch or arrogant businessmen saying absolutely anything to claim their retirement in the Bahamas.

(As you can tell... I don't find much amusement in some of what goes on...)

Hello & welcome @BeOne :)

I'm at the opposite end of the UK to you :D

You will indeed conquer this terrible affliction - but no need to push yourself. That's one of the many amazing things about e-cigs, you can take converting to them at your own pace :)

@djsvapour

Read about Article 20 last night. I'm unsure for the reasoning to all this. To me it looks like either pharmaceutical or tobacco companies are miffed because of the money they're losing and pushing for this. Damn the capitalistic world we live in where they put cash before people's lives.

They're gonna end up putting the price up so high, and have so many restrictions in place, that it'll become easier to start smoking again! Disgusting on so many levels.

@Chrissie,

Thanks for your welcome. Ah you're at the good weather end :). Thanks for showing me how to tag :)

I've gone straight for it. My girl has also gone for it so we're both in it together. On to day 4. Not been easy but we'll both support each other and definitely conquer it :)

Actually, I am fairly built up due to the type of work I do but it is my endurance that needs work.... Yep, I imagine I would get used to running ..... Yes, getting off the smokes is tough but it's FAR tougher without the help of vaping. If you have a satisfactory e-juice then it makes it even better. I have seen lots of times where people have a rough time quitting even when they were vaping and most of the time it was due to the fact that they were using an e-juice that was not fulfilling to them. Experiment around with different types of e-juice and you will be surprised. Keep up the good work.

    Hi all,

Thanks for all your welcomes :)

Yesterday was tough. Damn chemicals trying their hardest to hold me back and keep me hooked. Was victorious though and onto day three. Great to be here around like minded people.

With Vape's help I'll conquer this terrible affliction. (modification on a Trainspotting quote :) )
    Hang in there,
Perhaps get some juice with higher nicotine level, like 12 or even 18. Blu and other what we call "gas station" vape supplies because you only find them at gas (sorry petrol) stations are WAY expensive when you calculate how many you need.

From your earlier post running? really When I first stopped smoking I was happy with just walking the dogs at a fast rate, my congratulations on running and not ending up in hospital:)

Keep fighting the good fight, be patient with yourself, don't beat your self up. You not only have the chemicals in cigarettes but the social conditioning, media, peer pressure, over here in the "colonies" since you can't smoke inside there is a social thing about smoking, at least you can vape with the smokers!

Not only will you start to feel better, you will smell better (no offence, cigarette smell :)

Most of us have been where you are, I know I was, even if you slip, come back to vaping, after a week or so the taste of a cigarette will make you wonder how you ever smoked those things.
