Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Some cartridges come prefilled. They don't hold much and so they dry out quickly. Some people buy extra liquid to add to these. You can also get cartomizers(atomizer and cartridge in one) that come empty and you fill them up yourself with nicotine liquid. Many people seem to prefer this way. You can use cartridges or cartomizers for more than one filling by adding the nicotine liquid.

It can be, especially when 1st starting out, but once you get the hang of it you learn how to avoid making a mess. I don't use either at the moment, so I'm sure someone could offer a better explanation, there are also many threads here with info on the best ways to fill a cartomizer, but basically you take the rubber/silicone pieces out of the cartomizer and drip the liquid all around the edges (there is an airflow hole in the center that you don't want to fill) do this till the filling looks slushy, wait for a few minutes for the filling to absorb the liquid then drip more liquid in until it looks slushy again. then you either put the top rubber piece back on or put a drip tip on and you are good to go. With cartridges you just drip the liquid into the filling until it looks slushy. Always keep the filling in the cartridges or cartomizers wet, if you don't then you will get a burnt taste.

Hi ipjh89, and welcome to the forums!

There are also "tanks". These are like cartridges, without the filling. You refill them by taking a lid off and squirting in from a bottle. Not messy at all, in my (limited) experience.

There's a whole load of expertise on this forum, someone will know how to use cartridges with no mess - and tell you! Have you bought a PV yet? If not, maybe take a look round the reviews.

Welcome to the ECF ipjh89! There is a learning curve that we all go through when making the switch from smoking to vaping. I've knocked over open bottles of juice, squirted juice all over the kitchen trying to master the trayn spin  I've broken carto tank tubes allowing 6ml of juice to gush onto the floor. Yup, it can be messy. But, we learn.
