I'm only a few months in to vaping myself. But I assure you, it's just as confusing to a younger man just beginning to learn about the field, mostly because there is little or nothing in the way of an aggregate compendium of terms and knowledge. I have learned quite a lot since I started though, so perhaps I can help. Was there anything in particular you were wondering about? Or to put it a different way, what do you know about the subject thus far?

The quick answer is zilch, zero, nada, nothing.

I can guess what ecigarettes do; provide an inhalable vapor to the user. How this is done, I'm guessing, is by heating a liquid to make steam. I do not understand the function various parts of the equipment perform to do this.

I was looking at the Innokin Leo Pro Starter Kit Sampler here Innokin Leo Pro Starter Kit Sampler - ONLY $52.00!!

None of it made sense to me.

No kidding, ohms, volts, watts, cartos, attys, clearos. It's overwhelming as all hell. I'll do some poking around and see if I can find what you're looking for. :)

I'm a retired electronics engineer so I can help with the first three which are units of measurement in the world of electricity:

ohm is the unit of resistance (to current flow)
volt is the unit of force (to induce current flow)
watt is the unit of power (produced by an electrical current flowing through a resistance)

Your turn, Cetra, what is cartos? attys? clearos?

This can be the start of a glossary! :toast:

Atty = Atomizer

Let's start from the beginning. The two most basic components of an electronic cigarette are (of course) a battery and an atomizer. An atomizer is simply a small coil of corrosion-resistant wire (Kanthal is what is used in e-cigs) which is heated by passing an electric current through it, thus causing the e-cigarette "juice" that is in contact with the atomizer coil to flash-vaporize, and making it inhalable.

There are many ways of keeping an atomizer coil saturated with sufficient juice to produce vapor.

carto = cartomizer is a shortened form of "cartrige + atomizer", so it is nothing more than an atomizer enclosed in a cartrige which also holds a resevoir of e-juice.

Clearo = clear cartomizer, so same as above, but with a clear cartrige wall so you can see how much e-juice the uniti contains at any given moment

Thanks to all of you for the invaluable information.

A special thanks to Hooligan333 for his clear and succinct explanation of some terms.

I recently bought an ecigarette locally to try. I bought it at the smoke shop for $18.00 and it seems to work. I chose one with a tobacco flavor and learned that it contains nicotine. It came with two cartos and he sells juice for refilling for $15.

It tastes like a really bad cigarette.

Again, thank you all.

Way old newbie here.
I'm 78 years old and have been smoking since I was 12; 66 years.
Quitting is easy, I've done it many times over the years.
I look forward to learning something from your forum which may help me to quit tobacco permanently.
You've been smoking for 66 years !!??
Well ... I'm well over 60 and smoked 2-3 packs a day for over 40 years.
So we have a lot in common.

Funny ... before e-cigarettes came along ... I quit several times also
and I agree ... Quitting is easy ... Never smoking another cigarette
again ... That's the hard part.

Many of us used e-cigarettes as a quit smoking aid and it really works.
However, a lot depends on the individual. For me, I was fed up about
my entire life being tied to cigarettes and made up my mind to quit
regardless if E-cigarettes were extremely satisfying or not. At least
they would be much better than going "Cold Turkey"

I have only 2 bits of advise

1. Find an E-cigarette that you like and understand there are various
flavors and nicotine levels to choose from. Flavor is important but having
various levels of nicotine on hand is a key ... Sometime you will need
more than others ... just like when we used to smoke more during times
of stress.

2. Don't worry about vaping and put too much pressure on yourself
about never ever picking up a cigarette again. Many members used
to smoke a pack or more a day and now very comfortable with smoking
1-3 cigarettes a day... and that is a success story in of itself.

Relax and have fun with e-smoking ...
You will find you are smoking less and less.
If you are totally committed to quitting all together ... You will.
If not ... you will find you are comfortable with smoking a whole lot less.

A day will come ... when you smoke a cigarette and find they no longer
really tastes good and really not as satisfying as you remembered them to be...
AND that will probably happen before you quit smoking all together but even
more yucky smell and taste after not smoking for awhile.

Everybody is different ...
Relax and do what ever you feel comfortable doing with e-cigarettes.
You will find what is best for you ... E-cigarettes are an alternative
to smoking. They definitely take the edge off for the desire for a cigarette
and the habit of smoking is available.

I have 3 different styles of e-cigarettes and always have on hand various
levels of nicotine juice. Oh, and 3 different flavors. Different days and different
moods and stress levels ... thing.

You are going to be just fine ...
We are here for suggestions if ya like ... Don't take anything we say
as what you must do ... just suggestion, because only you will know
what works best for you.

Hi wlcome morguex. As confusing it may seem it first its really not all that complicated, once you get used to it.

Now first things first, I think A starter kit should be purchased. Once you get one they are pretty self explainitory, normally they come with: A Charger, 2 Batteries(electronic cigarettes) and somtimes depeding on, some cartomizers. For $50 dollers after the price of juice, Im sure you wont be disappointed
Hope this help T41ck

Wecome morguex,
My dad, 4 years older than you, learned electronics in the navy during Korea.
I smoked for 40 yrs and found this the only way for me that worked and it was easy.
I checked your link and that kit only has 1 battery....I never heard of that company.......no telephone no. that i could find.
Be careful, check on Ecf for a list of dealers. And many good people will be along with better kits shortly.

Howdy!!

There's a vapers meeting this sunday in Phx if you'd like to go out and meet some fellow vapers.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/vip-vaping-phoenix/354888-next-vip-meet-sunday-december-16-1pm.html
morguex,
One Ole man to another ...
If you want to skip over the endless list of questions and trial and error thing (as much as possible) ...
and find out first hand, in person (which is the best way to go) ... I highly recommend attending
the meeting ... it's not formal and a lot of fun ... You'll learn more there than weeks posting and
replying on threads here.

Oh, by the way ...
Which is the best e-cigarette for you?
There are many on the market and everyone here has their own idea what is the best
and the best for someone starting out. Including me...However, they might not be the best for you.

Trust me ...
Go to the meeting ... you will be glad you did.
:)
