Greets all!

Recently came to the conclusion that the smoke must go. Tried NRT, gum and lozenge. Gum was useless and lozenge put me in the ER with palpitations (PVCs). See, a major failing of NRT studies is they do not take into account the amount of nicotine an individual consumes. They go by the number of cigarettes smoked or, more laughable, how soon after you wake up do you have your first smoke. This angers me to no end but I'm not here to rant about that.
See, after smoking for 20 years, I found a list of tar and nic content of all major brands and used it as a guide over the following 2 years to get where I am now. Carltons. .1 mg nicotine per cig (that's point one, folks), and I smoke less than a pack a day plus I'm a shallow inhaler.
When I tried that damnable lozenge, it was roughly the equivalent of
smoking 2 packs in 1/2 hour. My heart didn't like it one bit and I didn't like the 4 hour long panic attack that followed.
There are some (both smoker and non) who try to tell me that I am not
addicted to nicotine at all and 'why do you even bother to smoke?' -sigh-
Addicted, I truly am, even at such a low dose but I suspect there are other
things in cigs that I've become physically dependant on as well. All I am certain of is that I am honestly dangerous to be around whenever I've tried to quit.
Due to recent health problems, I MUST quit the smoke and the tar and all
those endless and truly bizarre chemicals in it.
The e-cig seems almost the perfect answer. Almost.
I have googled and read these forums for over a week now and my eyes are hurting and I'd be crying if they weren't so dry. It just seems that the main focus is on how much pretty, billowy vapor one can get out of a cartridge. I could care less about the special effects. I want a quick fix at a nicotine dosage that I can tolerate. Yet I see sellers not even listing the amount of nic in their cartridges, and the ones that do, contain 11mg as their lowest. I think I saw 6mg somewhere but it's all getting kinda hazy. Add to this the wasted money I spent on gum, lozenges and a hefty ER bill and I'm sure you can grasp my frustration.
I've already pretty much decided that I am going to order from puresmoker but I am not so certain about the cartridges. I certainly won't be trying the medium and high strengths that come with the starter kit.
I think what I'm asking for here is for someone to help me do the math.
I puff on my wimpy little Carlton cig about 15 times to receive roughly .1mg
of nic. (shallow puffs) How many puffs with which cartridge (or juice, for that matter) will fix me up without OD'ing? Also, has anyone ever tried diluting their cartridge or juice?
Many thanks in advance. I think it was therapeutic just to get all that out there.

Hi Silurhian, welcome to the forum.

Many of us are convinced that esmoking is far healthier for you than smoking although we lack the formal evidence to prove this.

With esmoking you can adjust your nicotine dose to suit you. I can't help you with the maths, I am not so technically minded, I just make it up as I go along and judge by my own physical state. I buy high nicotine juice and cartridges and dilute with vegetable glycerine and flavourings. See the Diy eliquid board for some ideas about how to mix your own - DIY e-liquid - e-cigarette-forum.com • The place for electronic cigarette reviews, news and chat.

You may find that even with the maths you will have to mess about with dosages to find your own comfort zone, we all react differently. Personally I think that some of us are more sensitive to the nic in eliquid compared to cigs. It might be a different kind of nic, more or less potent, I'm not sure. I used to smoke strong roll-ups but I can only tolerate a low, dilute dose of nic with my ecig.

Some people miss some of the other additives of cigs or the carbon dioxide/lack of oxygen feeling. It takes a while sometimes to adjust to esmoking. Give it a few days, stop the cigs completely for a day if you can and see how you get on. Many of us find that the cigs taste horrible after this. Some people continue smoking and esmoking together but if you try esmoking on its own for a while you might find that it is far more satisfying than smoking. Without the proven health risks of smoking too ... what more could you ask!

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I was beginning to despair about high nic cartridges until I realized that many
are simply making their own. I even understand there is a zero nic juice?
How perfect! And Cashmere pointed me to the enticing Bickford site. This could be a ton of fun! And although I'm no where near ready to experiment with nic extraction, I can easily see myself combining this and that premade liquid for my personal tastes and tolerances. Um... where does everyone get their 'juices' in the US and empty bottles for their creations?
It will be a few days yet before my e-cig arrives, plenty of time for gathering more info. :D

It really is a lot of fun I think. I love making my own flavours and trying different gadgets.

Cartridges and eliquid tend to be sold in zero, low, medium and high strength nicotine levels. What those levels actually mean differ from manufacturer. High for Janty is 16mg, for Johnson Creek it's 24mg and for Wikid eliquid it's up to a whopping 36mg. I buy high because I know I'm going to dilute it to make it low anyway. That way I get some of the manufacturers flavour, propylene glycol and nicotine without having to source them individually. I have recently tried adding LorAnn candy flavours to my mix and they are very good, pralines and cream flavour is totally scrummy. There is information on the forum about different suppliers of ready made eliquid. The most famous where you are I think are Johnson Creek and JantyUSA. Both do various levels of nic in lots of different flavours.

Somebody will hopefully post advice for you on finding bottles, glycerine and pg in the US. A lot of people over there use Bickfords food flavours. That's a good one, it doesn't leave residue on your atomiser but make sure you don't get the oil based ones.

All the best, I'm sure you'll enjoy the esmoking adventure. Keep us up to date with your progress.
