OK... So I have been using a Kanger subtank mini and building on it's rba deck successfully for a while now and love it. Yesterday I decided to try an rda because a local shop was having a huge sale, and I thought it would be even better than the subtank. I got a plume veil clone and was confident I would love it, but I don't yet. I have now built several coils in it of varying resistances trying to get it to do what I want but it won't. No matter what I do (changing the coils and airflow settings) it takes several hits to start putting out a lot of vapor. This annoys me because every time I take a hit on my subtank it puts out tons of vapor. The plume veil also gets extremely hot, and the subtank doesn't. Is that just how it's supposed to be or am I doing something wrong? I really want to love dripping, but as of now I'm still using my subtank mostly. Also i am currently running it on a kanger k-simar with an efest purple 20A and 3100 mAh 18650 in it. Thank you in advance for any advice you offer!

What? Please disregard the above.

[Edit] Just ran my numbers and I'm vaping at just over 20W on a 0.7ohm coil. And that's assuming 4.2 volts (I'm sure I'm pushing 3.9-4.0 on a full charge after voltage drop).

According to the above poster, I should be getting no vapour... Then why am I getting delicious clouds from a cold coil on a one-second pulse?

That's my point. He's not getting vapour for other reasons. From what I can glean off the steam machine, his issue is likely a combination of being new to drippers and an underperforming battery (he's within 0.2 amps of his C rating, no idea what regulated devices do when you're close to that limit), but his device would be pushing less than 3.2 volts on those settings, and I'll bet you it's cutting him off.

I just got a Smok Caterpillar RDA today. Put a single 30ga 1.8 ohm coil in it with cotton wicking and it is vaping decent on a 650ma Ego. No clouds but better than an Evod. I got it for juice testing and it is working fine for that.

Ordered it from Litecig on Monday and got it today with regular 1st class mailing. $9 for it.

It's 26 guage kanthal the same that I use when building on the subtank deck and right now I'm running a 0.5 ohm spaced dual coil wrapped on a 3 mm rod and the mod says its running at 3.46 volts on the 18.5 watt setting... I preordered subox which goes up to 50w but also runs on an 18650. It won't be here for at least another week though. I bought both to run subtank, but do I need something else for rdas? I don't really want to get a mech mod because of the safety issues, and my boyfriend is running the exact same setup as mine with a single 1.4 ohm coil with no problem (I'm a girl BTW not a dude). My boyfriend does mouth to lung hits and I do lung hits, and I kind of feel like maybe it's that I'm sucking in to fast or something. Could that be it?

Yeah, you're currently pushing that battery of yours at its very limit of safe operation. You are going to need to get a better battery if you want to push more power on the new 50W machine.

So the "problem" in this case really is just being new to drippers, I guess. Simple issue of too much surface area for your mod. Try a single coil for now, or if you have higher gauge wire as Robert mentioned, you should see improvement.

OK... What is a good battery to get for that? And I'll get some higher guage wire too and try that

I hesitate to make battery recommendations. Nothing wrong with what you have, but it's got a low amp limit. I'm partial to the 30A Sony VTC series batteries, but they will have a noticeably shorter run time.

[EDIT] I should use this chance to mention that you would only need new batteries if you want to push them harder. But my opinion is that practice is the biggest improvement one can make to their rebuildables.

I've heard a lot of talking about the Sony vtc's so I'll look into it and definitely get a few 30A ones. I took out one of the coils so now it's 1.1 ohms and it does seem better, but I really wanted to learn how to build dual coils at some point though... I guess I'll just have to wait

No need to wait! You'll just need to build differently.

Your new best friend: Steam Engine | free vaping calculators :)

[EDIT] You'll hear it tossed around a lot that surface area is the key to flavour and vapour production, and that is 100% true.

People tend to forget to mention that surface area is relative:
