just got my DID clone genesis style atomizer in the mail....Uber excited...open it up, assemble it, oxidize the wick, wrap the coil and test fire it...nothing.

My mod has safety features so it wont fire. I MUST have a short somewhere...but I dunno. I realize it is not the prettiest coil ever made, but each coil is tight, and not touching. I posted pics from each side....help me to understand what I am doing wrong! I was thinking maybe there should be some insulation between the base of the positive post and the nut? It is metal to metal..not sure if that is a problem since there is a rubber grommet inside.

it the bottom nut on the center post is screwed down alll the way( not like in the pic) then you do have a short. As in the pic there is no short though. what guage wire are you using? perhaps you just need another wrap to get enough ohms so your device isnt reading a short. Also noticed I cant see where the neg leg is screwed into. It should be under the screw off to the side. Its kinda hard to tell from the pic. My money is on a short between the wick and coil or needing another wrap on the coil.

here is the link. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-unoxidized-hot-spot-free-cleanable-coil.html
What gauge wire are you using? The thicker the wire the more wraps you need. Think I used 8-9 on 28 gauge to get 1.9 ohms. It fired up great but was slow to heat due to the mass of the wire. had to vape at 13.5 watts to make it perform. Great vape though. Smaller wire seem to heat up faster so there is less delay time from fire to vape. I am still on the fence about what wire I like.

I dont know if I have ever been more excited and frustrated at the same time...EVER! lol

I used the "drill bit method this time and got a GREAT even burning coil. It was at a steady 3.1 ohm! Then when I slid the wick in it moved the coil around a bit and I had a hot spot. I guess I got over zealous trying to adjust it because I broke it again,,,,GAH!!!

First, fix the top insulator...

I always wrap the coil around a drill bit and roll the wick so it fits snugly into the coil (kinda like the petar k method) Test fire the coil before inserting the wick. If you can, check the ohms of just the coil and then again after you insert the wick. If it's the same reading, you most likely don't have a short.

When you roll the wick, fold the last 1/8" under to form a smooth edge. It's the little straggler wires of the mesh that can create shorting issues.

The most critical part about the Petar K method is proper sizing of the wick. If the wick is difficult to screw into the mounted coil, there's a good chance you'll scrape some of the oxidation off, and will get a hot spot. If the wick slides through without touching the wick at all, you may get a nice even glowing coil, but you'll have poor flavor and vapor. The wick needs to not fall through, but just meet with slight resistance, when inserting it through the coil. It takes some practice to size the wick just right. Also, make sure the wick isn't touching the bottom of the tank.

if it fires great without a wick in it and then has a hot sport with a wick in it then you are shorting against the wick and need to work on getting the wick oxidized properly.

Don't feel bad.....it's the hardest part about getting a genesis style atomizer to work. Everybody has had to go through it. Be careful not to over-oxidize the wick and just keep at it, you get it..........once you find yer best method for making wicks( there is a lot of em) then it'll be easy.

Have fun...
