Silica is a lot easier to work with than ss mesh, for someone who is beginning to rebuild attys. It really depends on what kind of ohms you are looking for. 32 gauge wire will give you a higher resistance than 30 or 28. It is also thinner, and i think harder to work with. I prefer Kanthal over nichrome, but it's only because i never had any luck with nichrome. I didn't enjoy it as much. As far as the silica, a lot of people like the ecowool.

I've had best results with 28g with about 8 wraps (vv/vw) on 3mm "short" wick (one strand just long enough to hang down without blocking the channels). I use a 1/16" drill through the wick to make my wraps.
