I only post this because I find it funny. NYC and other anti smoking groups lobby for astronomical taxes and then want the FDA to crack down on a problem they created. If taxes weren't so high it wouldn't be as big an issue I don't believe.

Citizen Petition to Request FDA Fight Tobacco Smuggling.

If this is out of line for the forum I apologize, as we were all once smokers and this is probably part of the reason some of us started vaping I thought it appropriate.

It’s all about the money. New York wants these regulations enacted because they can’t tax cigarettes that are smuggled into their state. Virginia, on the other hand, doesn’t want this to happen because they tax the cigarettes that are bought in Virginia and smuggled to New York. It is sometimes funny to see the unintended consequences of government actions.

Prohibition proved it in the early 1900's. Vast fortunes, such as the Kennedy's, were amassed because of the bootlegging of liquor during Prohibition. I guess politicians didn't pay attention during History class, and they're running the states and the country? They think they can control all of the people all of the time!? Criminals are not law abiding citizens.

I live in NYC....and I must say that as the cigarette taxes went up, the black market tobacco sales exploded. I don't know any smoker who pays NYC taxes on their smokes. They either buy them in NJ or they buy them from black market vendors who are all over the place. Many of the small corner stores here even sell black market smokes under the counter because they lost so much revenue from dropped sales. These taxes have hurt small business and generated less revenue for the city as well created more crime. Mayor Bloomberg and NYC are out of control. Telling us what to eat and drink. Illegal stop and frisks by the police. Spy drones all over the place. It's absolutely disgusting whats become of my city.

I spent a number of months "smuggling" cigarettes from VA to PA before I quit but it wasn't so much for cost savings as it was to avoid inhaling the chemicals used to add FSC/RIP to the paper. Of course eventually VA's cigarettes were converted and that was the end to the "smuggling" and the start of my e cig/snus journey.

As with all laws, it costs money to enforce. It requires police work, court time, lawyers, etc, etc. Nothing is for free.
