Has anyone tried using oil (olive or vegetable) as a base instead of VG/PG and if so what were the results?

It wouldn't be prudent. Oils can cause a very specific type of pneumonia. I think in the DIY forum there was a posting covering the specifics, but the gist of it was if it's an oil, don't use it.
Oh wow, thanks for the reply!!! I was thinking about trying it but I will search the DIY froum before I do anything. That's the last thing I need to do is give myself pneumonia. 
It will kill your atomizer very quickly. Also with oil you might even get smoke out it rather then vapor. Oil is not a base. Even oil based flavors are not the best to use because they dont like to mix well and the shortened atomizer life. Although some people do use oil based flavors but you have to mix or cut it with PGA so it will mix and they use a very low % of it in the total mix. So besides the heath hazards that simpleSins pointed out there are these ones i pointed out too.
On top of previous posters' points... I really wouldn't want to take the chance of that stuff igniting, either. Different oils have varying smoke points and flash points (the temp at which something will ignite) and some of them can be relatively low. Oil/grease fires are nasty dangerous.

Yes if you heat olive oil in a pan for too long it does not vaporise. It gives off a black smoke (briefly) and then catches fire. Theres a reason they use glycols in smoke machines rather than oil
