Cyclone Yasi bears down on Queensland

The Australian state of Queensland could be facing one of the worst cyclones in its history, as it works to recover from devastating floods. (Quote from BBC Mobile News, link below)

BBC News - Australia braces for Cyclone Yasi as Queensland

This is a monster (Goliath) cyclone heading straight for Australia...It is reported to be 500km wide and and an eye 100km.

Our God IS big enough to stymie the world and with a WORD, dissolve this cyclone. Proclaim His mighty power........protect His people and may all the children of Australia cry out to Him who is MIGHTY TO SAVE!

How Great is our God...GOD BLESS AUSTRALIA!

I just saw on the news that it was pretty bad, but so far no loss of life. Thank you Jesus! Much devastation tho, will take a long time to recover. Sad.

Thank you Jesus for the hand that is never too short to save being over the precious Australians who love you.... We love you and Thank you Lord... ♥

The largest cyclone in over a century for Australia and NO LOSS OF LIFE! Not only no loss of life, but life added! MIRACULOUS!

Here are 2 great news articles:

Relief as Australia mops up from giant cyclone - Weather - msnbc.com

Partial Article: CAIRNS, Australia — Australians voiced relief and surprise after one of the world's most powerful cyclones spared the nation's northeast coast from expected devastation on Thursday, with no reported deaths despite winds tearing off roofs and toppling trees.

Cyclone Yasi, roughly the size of Italy and packing winds of up to around 186 miles per hour, threatened Australia with its second major natural disaster in as many months this week but ended up missing heavily populated areas. END...to read full account click on the link above.

Close shave as Yasi blows over Queensland!

Article: North-eastern Australia had a miraculous escape on Thursday when the worst cyclone to hit Queensland in a century missed two major cities, sparing thousands of people from its full force.

During the storm, a British midwife spending her 25th wedding anniversary on holiday in the state helped deliver a baby girl in an evacuation centre.

Carol Weeks, one of scores of British tourists on the north Queensland coast, was evacuated to Redlynch State College with her husband Andrew when Red Cross officials appealed for help.

Anna Bligh, the state's premier, said the arrival of Akiko Pruss's baby would "bring a lot of smiles?Ö after such a difficult and distressing night."

Cyclone Yasi had been expected to hit Cairns, which is home to 160,000 people. Authorities had warned that the "life threatening" winds, stronger than those in Hurricane Katrina, could also severely damage Townsville, the unofficial capital of the state's tropical north.

Instead, Cyclone Yasi slammed into the coast halfway between the two tourist centres.

It knocked out power to 180,000 people and destroyed hundreds of homes, but by late afternoon police had no reports of deaths or serious injuries, although two men were listed as missing.

Neil Roberts, the state's emergency services minister, said it was an "amazing outcome". End Article
