Maybe I took the manufacturer message to heart too much because I'm always trying to keep my PV vertical when I set it down. Do you really think it makes much difference? What position do you set your unit in when not in use? I've taken to using my old ash trays as holders because it keeps the unit at least at a slanted angle. I think a short juice glass works even better. Maybe we need PV "ashtrays" to be constructed. I almost never set down on a table or something in a horizontal position. You have to so something with it while you use your hands to type, so what do you do with your PV?

For me it makes little difference how I set it now. I also was worried at first about this however. I read how some keep it cart down so as not to flood the atty, I read just the opposite for those that are afraid of drying out the atty!

The key for me was finding a cart filler that does not leak, yet still wicks.
I have stock carts that were fine, I had others with a smidge less filling that would leave a runny mess leaking out after 1 hit or laying it in any position besides cart down.

What works best for me atm, is the filter pads from the pet store. If you have trouble with the single width leaking, double them over like I did.

I considered the wool thing also but couldnt find a sheep small enough to fit in the atty

I would suggest experimenting to find what works best for you and go with that. You might opt for direct dripping as well, warning this will spoil you!

I'm allergic to wool...

would cotton, as in cotton balls, work?

In theory, maybee! ymmv.

As far as things I have seen/heard being tried/used:
(The first 2 you will see in new carts)

Fluval
Nicosorb (fluval+polyfill blend)
Polyfill (pillow stuffing, stuffed animals etc get at crafts stores etc)
Felt (ugh)
Sponge (might burn)
Wool
Cotton (like in a zippo lighter, I think it might burn)
Air conditioner filters (...)
Analog ciggarete filters (Yikes)
Fish tank foam sleeves (Works great for me, Yay!)
Old Gym Socks (eew)
Titanium Mesh ($)
Spring from a pen with a bit of one of the above at the end to stop fluid from pouring out.
More but it gets sad from here.

Idealy you want something that:

1. Holds onto the liquid so it does not POUR out.
2. Wicks well for you.
3. Does not melt/burn at the temp your atty runs at (variable)
4. Does not affect the taste of your juces. (ymmv)
5. Is cheap to come by. (unless you are like onassis)
6. You arent allergic too.
7. Stuff I forgot goes here

And last but not least, just WORKS for you.

Happy hunting!

The answer to this question depends on the thickness of your juice and what filler material you are using. Basically you want something that wicks well and does not leak, and then you don't have to worry so much about what angle you keep it at.

But if you are like the rest of us and have not solved this mystery of the universe, then in general you would ideally want to keep it cartridge side down when full to prevent leaking and flooding the atomizer, and battery side down when getting emptier so as to help gravity pull juice from the bottom of the cartridge back to the top.

I cant really put mine vertical very well because its on a passthrough most of the time so the little cord coming out at the end makes this difficult and it flops over enough when trying to lean it on the side of my computer desk' hutch wall that I just gave up and lay it down on the desk. Right now this particular E cig (my 801) has its original filler in the cartridge but when its time I'll repack it with a folded and partially sliced lipton pyramid tea bag.

When its not on the passthrough its because I've taken it with me to where I'm laying on the couch or took it to bed with me and then when used its completely vertical the wrong way!

(otherwise laying sideways again, tucked under the bed or couch pillow so the cat won't biff it away to his "magic cat vortex land" if I should fall asleep)
