I don't know if this is a variation of "new car syndrome" - you know, when you get a new or at least new to you and all of a sudden you notice them everywhere. Well, it seems to me that vaping is starting to hit critical mass and I think (hope) that we are going to be seeing more articles like this.

As someone who has been following the media's take on electronic cigarettes for nearly four years...

Up until about two years ago you really never saw any quality articles whatsoever.
In fact, you were happy if you found an article that didn't mostly blast them by following the ANTZ and FDA mantra.

Then we started to get some more balanced articles now and then.
The frequency of balanced articles definitely seems to be increasing as time goes on.

In the last year or so we have been starting to see really good articles on occasion.
Pretty much all of these really good articles are coming from independent media outlets though.

There have been a few exceptions along the way, but these are the trends I'm seeing.

And we will hopefully soon move into a time where mainstream media might just do a largely positive piece.
But I sort of doubt the mainstream media will do the right thing anytime soon.

Thoughts from others?

I've only been following the media since February of last year (when I started vaping), but I'm seeing the same trend. IMO, the main reason you won't see a lot of positive articles in the main stream media outlets is because good news just doesn't sell that well. What's really sad is that we (the consumers of media) could change this trend, but we mostly get caught up in the hype their selling.

I certainly do not disagree with your comments, but I wonder how much Big Pharma's influence over mainstream media comes into play.
They certainly do a lot of advertising, and their commercials are pretty long (money) because of all the disclaimers.

I have no doubt that competing interests with their advertisers come into play as well. Probably a much stronger influence than most realize.

BluGlen and DC2 have raised a relevant issue, the influence of BP's advertising on Big Media content, but I think you've hit the nail here. (In fact, I've been looking for your post since last night to reply, cause you got me thinking.) Just within the last two weeks or so, I'm seeing more and more balanced and generally positive articles across the media. Yes, they still :sigh: mention the FDA/2009 business, and quote the "we just don't know what's in them" ANTZ mantra, but they're also balancing that with positive mentions of "safer than" and "vaping is exploding across the country" and more positive and knowledgeable quotes from vapers. Even the medical/scientific media seem to be leaning more and more to the balanced viewpoint.

I do believe we're seeing a critical mass being reached, or at least coming closer. I certainly hope so; it'll help my blood pressure immensely!

Its obvious that mainstream media "could" be biased due to major advertising dollars from BP. I don't personally believe this is relevant. BP HAS TO advertise either way. Their commercials must be shown in order to sell their wonderful products. I think the negativity in mainstream media stems from selling drama instead of selling news. There are very few reporters left anymore. I highly respect those who put their lives on the line, going overseas, reporting on the front lines, of some of the terrible wars we have been in. Nobody would watch the news if it were ALL good news. It is just more compelling to report on the negative and dramatic. Credibility has been lost!
