I never let my coils get that bad. I switch cotton out twice a day, sometimes more. I don't see why a person would wanna let their coils get that black. Vaping is supposed to taste better than smoking. Clean coils, clean cotton. All day.

good for you, but i dont like the taste of "fresh cotton" all day long. - every rewick, brings on the "fresh cotton taste" wich doesnt dissipate untill after 2~mls are vaped from the tank, by then the majority of my wake hours are gone and rewicking is redundant.

no one said anything about letting coils turn black - i just asked for photos of "working" builds that have ben used to the point of "right before" rewicking.

Pictures are not going to tell you anything.
Your need to know is going to be based strictly on Your build and the e-liquids/quantity you use.

One of my orchids needs the wicks replaced every 30-40Ml and another goes an easy 120ml. Both are 3mm Dual coil builds. one at .4ohm and one at .6ohm. Both running at 30w and using Rayon wicks(Tree cotton:laugh:)

pictures paint a thousand words - i understand everyone has a different "matrix" via juice and what not and some setups gunk faster then others.

i just want to verify that it is normal for my wicks to look the way they do - a picture is only going to help.

and going by the info you shared, something i would have to assume is wrong i only get 12~mls out before the coil is completely caked over and gunked - thats vaping unflavored 90vg 10DW "juice"

Here you go Bud.

This is not a horror build, although it could be mistaken for one now. It had probably 10-12 tanks run through it in the course of two weeks. It may have gone for another 1 or two tanks but it was getting a little funky, and the back wash was getting very noticeable. It still had great dragster action and the vapor was still impressive.

I do DIY and the juices run the gamut from crystal clear to dark ale brown, but all of it is 80-20 mix.

And I agree with CR, These pics probably dont do you much good since you are running such high VG. Running high VG you need a larger coil and super loose/light wicking going through the coil and even than, its going to gunk up or clog up quicker. VG is to atomizers like cholesterol is to blood vessels. I only vape my high VG stuff in my drippers and it usually clogs the wick up well before it gunks the coil up.

Even in times when the wick/coil seem to be falling off, you can<if regulated> increase wattage and often clear up function. Within a few vapes returning to normal power settings.

I have also broken down builds that looked trashed and as soon as I started to rinse things off the Wick turned back to Clean White material, even if the Coil had build up.

Consider what you are Vaping in respect to others as much as how you are building.

You say 90%VG/10DW, so No PG/Nic/Flavoring???????? your setup should be lasting 10x longer.

the pictures helped more then you can imagine - and it helped me see it is normal for it to gunk up the way it is.

the 90vg 10DW i was using, was only used as a test run juice for this orchid, i didnt want to fill it with my good stuff before i got it working correct (dont like to waste made juice)

as far as tastes goes, i never tasted any dry hits or cotton - just the after math taking the tank apart, made me think otherwise and guess is it was burning. goes to show i was wrong, and everything is fine.

thanks alot, and many many kudos to your pictures :p

since i cant post pictures atm, after 2 tank fulls, the coils/wicks look almost exactly like this

still running the 90vg 10dw - and the coils are 3mm id, 28g kanthal, 8/9wrapps, .9 total - and i dont run them above 4.2V or 20W

Your Numbers are barely reaching normal for safe vaping, on the cold side. This leads to faster Gunking due to slow boiling.
Your build would work better in the 25-35w range.
