Hi all,
I am getting into this "hobby" for real and wanna make an order of wires, a pretty decent order with a good mod and another RDTA, But the big question here is which wires should I order, if kanthal than which gauge and other types of wires, I want it to last a few months and for me to be able to experience common builds, which wires do you order or have in your kit, the most common used and flavor full ones.

Ok, I have the avacado 24 so maybe I can help!! The build I have in mine now is 24ga kanthalA1, 8/9 wraps, 3mm diameter coil. I've got mine on a Hexohm and dial it to taste and really haven't put the meter on it to check the output. The potentiometer is right in the middle. Nice warm flavorful vape with 70vg/30pg juice. I usually rewick every 3-4 days. Cotton bacon v2. If you have the wicking down well with the avacado you should be good to go!!

You could probably pick up some 26ga as well and build that to suite. Steam engine will help you figure out how to dial in your builds to taste with temperature preferences.

You can't go wrong with ordering a little bit of everything. I'd start with small amounts ~30 foot spools to learn what you like. KA1 24, 26, 28, 30 - Maybe some N80 in same gauges. I'd probably hold off on SS, Ni and Ti until you have mastered building with the aformentioned wire types. It's too bad PureAtomist is out of their sampler packs currently, but here is their site: Resistance Wire

Highly recommended, great prices and fast shipping. You could also check out Lightening vapes, Temco and ebay.

Things to keep in mind, in general the lower the gauge 1. the lower your resistance will be 2. the longer your ramp time will be 3. the warmer your vape will be
Sounds like you are going to prefer 28g - 30g for starters, so if you don't want to go wire crazy, you could start there. N80 is going to ramp a little faster than Ka1. Also, the higher the gauge the more "springy" the wire will be, meaning the harder it will be to coil. A coiler may help you but not necessary.

Would I get good flavor from kanthal only? Also I don't want to start with TC but stick to VW, what about wire type? Clapton? Fused? Alien?

If you needed to start from scratch and order with flavor in mind, what would it be?

    For me 28, 26, 24 ga Kanthal or 26, 24 ga SS
I use 26 ga the most for my .5 ohm builds
    Coil wrapping
Wire is cheap, experiment, have fun....

Do you plan on making your own?? If you are new to building, I would stick to the basics, learning as you go! A simple single or parallel coil will get you where you want to be. Maybe you could try pre made claptons to see if you like them first!

You are just getting started so keep it easy in the beginning. 28 guage is probably best at first. If you can learn to like 316 stainless it works in watts or temp control mode (it's what I use). Something easy to build on might be smart, a Tugboat V2 perhaps. I bought my organic cotton squares on amazon. A $14 bag will last for years. I believe mine was shipped directly from Japan. (Organic is prefered because the plant is supposely never sprayed with chemicals, may be a good thing if you are inhaling the liquid it carries.) I bought my wire and clone rda's from fasttech. I bought most of my mods from there too. If you buy from FT you might pick up some thrum scissors and tweasers and a coiling tool. You can also get a threaded base for mounting an atomizer for rebuilding but I usually leave it on the mod. The moment I started building was the end of my interest in coil heads.

Ss is definitely the most versatile. Sure, lower resistance (which won't matter on a modern regulated device) but other than that it works just as kanthal in vw mode. I really see no point in going for kanthal anymore.

Ka1 is where I started and surely provides great flavor. KEnD hit the nail on the head, SS wire (316L) has provided the best flavor IMHO. Only problem is that it is "low resistance" wire. But 28 gauge and up should allow you to get to a resistance you are comfortable with. And, As Ken said, it can be used in VW or TC modes. Also, to me, it is so much easier to coil.
As far as claptons and the like, if you can buy them pre done that's great, no problem. Just throw them in and go (safety in mind of course). It wil take some time to actually master those build so if that is your plan, bone up on simple, naked coils first. When perfected, start branching out. Try twisting wires, try paralleling wires, try braiding them. Research claptons and you'll probably get sucked down the rabbit hole from there;)

No complex builds with aliens and stuff? Also, regulated vs unregulated? I sure like the tube form factor

Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
You can certainly give aliens a shot but I can tell you first hand it is not an easy task to manage without practice, practice and more practice. Of course, you have to master the simple clapton before considering aliens. regulated vs unregulated is more of a personal choice than a recommendation. It's like asking if you should order chicken or steak. I like steak personally, but that guy over their swears by the chicken.

I am with you on the tube form factor;) I love my single battery mechs!

SAFETY. Learn all you can about regulated v. mechanical. Bodily harm is a distinct possibility of you don't know what you are doing. I would never bash mech users but prefer regulated. I like the fact that for the most part, it's the same power delivered to your build each and every time, mostly.......

This and also know the limits of the batteries you are using.

But after that I would suggest a spool of 28, 26 and 24 gauge kanthal as a good starting point for wires to learn with.

    Good luck :thumb:
